CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS - HELEN DUVAL - SEPTEMBER 2019

Today there seems to be a real lack of trust. Intergenerational mistrust has probably never been so disparate as it is today. In an ideal world, surely we want to create an environment that allows people to grow and do well. Selling promises of delivering a better and more relevant future is something that younger generations simply do not believe any more. With issues like housing and skills shortages still reflecting negatively, the world must seem a pretty grim place for many millennials. Developing a culture where individuals can flourish and thrive is about taking a positive direction and embracing change to encourage a younger, perhaps poorer, generation to succeed.

Many companies in this sector provide training for every employee at every level across an entire business. Developing talent from within, and listening to younger voices creates a trust where people can share views in an honest and open way that will result in greater positivity all round. So much trust has been lost in politicians and the leadership of this country, that there seems to be a genuine crisis - particularly when it comes to inspiring graduates and young people within the sector. People appear to be skeptical about the credibility of politicians and it really will take an exceptional leader to win general trust across this multi-generational population. There can be few who would have expected the credibility of government officials to have fallen so far in the last 5 years.

continuing with tourists wishing to visit many of the most modern sky-scrapers to gain a selfie ‘in the sky’. Glass floors have been installed in numerous sky rise buildings, which have been deliberately designed to add to the excitement of the visit to an otherwise mundane building. In Seoul the Lotte World Tower enables visitors to look down at the city through the world’s highest glass bottomed observation deck. It makes money out of it too with a fast pass ticket costing around £34 each. It is not alone as the Rockerfeller Centre will cost a minimum of £29 today and with over 3 million visitors every year that is a cool £87 million just gained from the viewing platform. Meanwhile The Empire State building observation deck brings in £49million annually whilst our very own Shard costs £32 per ticket and gives a 360 degree view of the Capital. So there is a lot of potential for processors to expand business opportunities as a supplier. Providing glass flooring on skyscrapers with ambitiously designed viewing platforms, will help the developers and business owners to gain some revenue from hosting visitors onto an exquisitely designed observation deck, particularly one that has been created with glass as a pivotal feature. It is an investment that could bring a good ROI for many years. As an option for processors, that really does demonstrate a powerful belief and trust in a company and its products.

Of course, life circumstances do play a huge role in anyone’s perceptions. Skepticism is a by-product of political and economical instability people will trust leaders far more if they are experiencing good times and much less during bad. Excessive levels of executive pay for senior bankers and business leaders probably does not help, as the disparity between the wealthy and the poor seems to ever widen. This is of course more controllable than the country’s overall economic situation. Taking the initiative and providing the next generation of builders and installers with ways to improve career opportunities and provide routes for achievement will build greater trust and a better society all round in the future. Financial industries and the banking sector seem to be two of the least trusted business arenas with national media not far behind. So it bodes well for glass and glazing! Social media has allowed the credibility of us ordinary mortals to rise above traditional media routes, but with the more recent Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandals this arena too is now tainted. Traditional media avenues have lost their control on how things are perceived. Manipulation of the masses is a disturbing truth that is alarming but it is the social platform that is still something people rely upon. There is an addiction to social media which interconnects pretty much every generation. Instagram and Twitter are highly valued as tools to connect with Instagrammable experiences shared with family, friends and followers, as much of an every day habit as breakfast and sleeping. These platforms still have exceptional credibility and power for so many people. Businesses are catching up on the selfie trends, and that high rise buildings have their place in them too.

Observation decks have drawn crowds for decades on some of the world’s tallest buildings. This trend is

MORLEY GLASS SETS ITS SIGHTS ON INTEGRAL BLIND COMPANY AWARD

Morley Glass and Glazing is in the running to be crowned Integral Blind Company of the Year at the annual National Fenestration Awards. The business is up against two other companies in the category, and while the competition is strong Morley feels confident thanks to its commitment to customer service, 10 -day lead time for sealed units with integral blinds inside, as well as continued year-on-year growth. Over the last 12 months, the business has hit a million metres of glass milestone with Saint-Gobain Glass, enjoyed a successful outing at the 2019 FIT Show and reported an annual growth in turnover of 22%, all while continuing to offer an industry- leading lead-time of 10 days from 11am any Friday, delivering nationwide and regularly manufacturing over 2500 blinds per week. Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass & Glazing, says: “The National Fenestration Awards organisers are very passionate about celebrating as many of the fantastic achievements in fenestration as possible, as well as getting everyone involved from every area of the industry. The awards are

a fantastic way to shine a spotlight on the best our industry has to offer and we’re proud to be a part of that. “2019 has seen us continue to build on the foundations we’ve established over recent years, but we haven’t been resting on our laurels, as proven by our continued growth. We can’t wait to show everyone what we’ve got in store for 2020, but in the meantime winning the Integral Blinds Company category at the NFAs would be a perfect way to reflect our future ambitions.” Launched in 2013, the open platform National Fenestration Awards are run and decided completely by the participation of the industry. Instead of judges and panels, winners are chosen by the public. In fact, everyone is welcome to register on the site and make their voices heard before voting closes on Friday 4 October.

LONDON SASH AND FRAME - ANOTHER EXCLUSIVE FROM MASTERFRAME

Sash window specialists Masterframe have launched its unique London Sash and Frame system. It is perfect for replacing timber windows with an arched exterior and square interior, commonly found in Victorian buildings in London and the surrounding areas. The exclusive system shares all the benefits of Masterframe’s Authentic or Vintage Collections and means that installers don’t have to rely on finding a bespoke design to achieve this window style. Ray Rabett, Technical Director at Masterframe, explains: “We were first approached about this window style when a customer was replacing windows at Guildford High School. The existing sash windows were square internally, but arched externally, and there wasn’t a solution on the market for a like-for-like replacement. “We worked with them to deliver a solution for the project, but soon realised that this wasn’t a one-off. There were plenty of buildings around the London area that had this window style.” Masterframe now produces CAD drawings for each individual window specifying the PVC-U London Sash and Frame to ensure complete accuracy. High quality panelling is then shaped by experts to fit each individual aperture.

Fully trained fabricators construct the window and complete to a stunning finish.

London Sash and Frame is faster to install than traditional arched windows and made bespoke to fit the original architecture. It’s an ideal option for conservation areas, as the authentic design offers incredible aesthetics, with white wood foil and a colour-matching paint service available if required.

Ray adds: “This system is completely bespoke and completely unique to the market, making it faster and easier to complete renovation projects that feature this window style.”

ADVANCE 70 AND SELECTA GOING FROM STRENGTH- TO-STRENGTH The Selecta renaissance continues to go from strength-to-strength with three nominations at the National Fenestration Awards 2019, coming on the back of a record number of conversions to the Advance 70 Window and Door System. Sales Director, Andy Green, talks about industry award recognition and the reasons why an array of fabricators and installers are embracing the huge opportunities of being part of the UK’s only independent and family owned PVCu Systems Company. The last two and a half years have been a tremendously busy and successful period for everyone involved at Selecta, with the last six months in particular being busier than we’ve ever experienced in recent years. So much so, that I’ve had comments that I’ve not been seen in the industry press recently, but that’s only because I’ve been up and down the country visiting customers and converting unhappy fabricators over to the Advance 70 System and Selecta! IT’S ALL ABOUT TRUST During this time, we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of fabricators who feel they have been let down by their current window and door profile systems company. There seems to be a distinctive lack of trust - a breakdown of communication and support from their existing systems company. For me it’s all about trust. Commitment to customers, in all its forms, is integral to the success of their business and Selecta. For us, being independently and family owned allows ourselves to keep things personal, which is a good thing, as we aim to build and develop partnerships whatever the size of their business. People buy off people and our success is testament to that ethos,

having made 41 conversions already so far this year, we’re appealing to a broad range of large, medium and small fabricators from all over the UK. Being that independent family run business continues to be an important and differentiating quality that more and more customers have come to acknowledge – there are so many like-minded, family run fabrication and installation businesses that we relate to. Building strong business relationships is a significant aspect for many companies and this, along with our personal touch, remains one of our strengths.

As a team we take a firm stance on product and customer development with product capabilities key. These are supported by our traditional family values and ethos of which is of paramount importance to us as a business. This has been reflected in being nominated finalists in three categories at the National Fenestration Awards. THREE, THE MAGIC NUMBER? Having been voted winners of Systems Company 2017 and PVC Company 2018, we are looking to make it three in a row– with the industries help of course! At this year’s awards, we have been nominated for Systems Company 2019 and PVC Company 2019, whilst our Marketing Manager, Mark Walker, is up for Social Networker 2019. Being voted Systems Company and PVC Company previously, epitomises the amount of hard work that the team have put in to, not only winning two years in a row, but by also being nominated finalists in three categories again at this years awards. We fully endorse what the National Fenestration Awards stand for and appreciate the fact of knowing that this is all down to true industry recognition and not just a panel of ‘experts’. It’s your nominations and votes that count and make it special. With further industry award recognitions under our belt, new marketing support packages and brand new exciting product developments planned for the beginning of the new year, we foresee an exciting and successful future for all whom are part of the Selecta ‘family’. MEETING CUSTOMERS NEEDS

Recognising customers needs is vitally important to both our customers and Selecta’s success. Recently, a large trade customers requirement for a simplistic frame connection system, to suit their installer network, resulted in a brand new product development to accompany the Advance 70 System. This saw the design and launch of LINK70, a pre- glazed frame connection system, which makes for simpler and faster installation of pre-glazed frames on site. The introduction of LINK70, mostly for the trade fabricator, has helped to reduce an installers average installation time of a standard conservatory by approximately 20%. It’s these kind of customer focused developments that have opened up new opportunities to both the fabricator and Selecta. The Advance 70 Window and Door System has also undergone improved and upgraded product testing, covering PAS 24: 2016 and Secured by Design, thus enabling Document Q compliance and providing installers with the ideal window and door solution for new build projects. The upgraded PAS 24 and Secured by Design testing and certification includes casement windows, single leaf doors, French doors, patio doors and our innovative EASi-FOLD doors.

CMS WINDOW SYSTEMS SHORTLISTED FOR HAT-TRICK OF AWARDS

CMS Window Systems is celebrating being shortlisted as a finalist in three prestigious window and door industry awards. The company, which is Scotland’s largest designer, manufacturer and installer of PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling, has been named as a finalist in Sustainability Initiative of the Year category of the G19 Awards and for the Recycling Company accolade in the 2019 National Fenestration Awards. In addition, CMS’s Contracts Manager John Deacon, who works with customers to deliver window and door programmes across Scotland, is named a finalist in the Unsung Hero category. Unique in the industry with its ‘closed loop’ windows and doors service to customers, CMS continues to be at the forefront of providing sustainable windows and doors. The company now operates three factories in Scotland, all of which have in-house recycling facilities to ensure all post-consumer windows and doors, as well as production waste, can be recycled. For the last two years, CMS has diverted 100% of waste away from landfill.

prestigious awards. We continue to push the boundaries on sustainability with our in-house recycling centres now delivering outstanding results. And our pioneering new initiatives around biodiversity and reducing fossil fuel use are also enabling us to set ambitious carbon reduction goals which further shrink our carbon footprint. “It is also fantastic to see John Deacon named as a finalist for an individual award. John has worked so hard to support the communities in which CMS operates, particularly through building links with charities who support disadvantaged people. We wish John and all the people and businesses shortlisted the very best of luck on the awards evening.” Employing more than 320 people at its main factory, recycling centre and HQ at Castlecary near Glasgow, and its production facilities in Kirkcaldy and East Kilbride, CMS Window Systems provides high performance PVCu and aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling to the social housing, housebuilding, commercial and trade sectors across Scotland and increasingly UK-wide.

SUSTAINABILITY AWARD NOMINATION FOR LINIAR With a continued focus on making a difference in the local community and ensuring that its impact on the environment is a positive one, leading PVCu systems company Liniar is delighted to announce it’s been shortlisted for the Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the G Awards 2019 under its trading company HL Plastics! “The G Awards are one of the most prestigious awards for the fenestration industry and to be listed as a finalist is one of the highest honours,” comments Liniar’s Marketing Director Sue Davenport. “Liniar’s environmental and recycling initiatives are embedded in the culture of the business, including the achievement of ISO 14001 accreditation and ongoing investment in site and facilities. Our CO² savings equate to hundreds of thousands of tonnes and we’re 63% ahead of target on our Specific Energy Consumption. “We didn’t begin these changes to be named as a finalist – but it’s great to receive the recognition. Having been recycling in-house for more than 25 years, we’re proud of our zero operational waste record – and we’re delighted the fenestration industry is becoming increasingly environmentally conscious. It’s one of our goals to ensure the construction industry continues to view PVCu as a sustainable solution.” In addition to shrinking its own carbon footprint, Liniar’s design team has always strived for the creation of the most energy efficient windows and doors as possible. The EnergyPlus90 90mm system is the UK’s first PVCu window system to achieve Passive House certification, and the latest flush sash Resurgence achieves U-values as low as 0.8, thanks

to its double rebate – all helping to reduce energy consumption around the nation. PLOT TWIST! Being shortlisted is excellent, but in a twist of fate, Liniar is up against one of its customers for the G Award! One of Liniar’s fellow finalists happens to be its newest commercial fabricator in Scotland, CMS Window Systems. CMS is well-known for excellence in manufacturing as well as PVCu recycling and has a great environmental record itself. With headquarters located in a cutting-edge facility in Cumbernauld, CMS fabricates high quality, energy efficient Liniar windows and ensures end-of-life windows are recycled into new products instead of going to landfill – ensuring a fully closed loop system. Liniar has a well-earned reputation for putting customers first – so the whole team will be awaiting the outcome with bated breath. As they say…may the best man win! IS BATHROOM RENOVATION THE NEWMUST HAVE?

Although not the first room thought about by those looking to update their homes, with kitchens and conservatories taking a priority for many people, new bathrooms can add considerable value to a home in need of modernisation. More than that, today many estate agents report that an ensuite bathroom is becoming a priority for people when buying a new home. So it would be unwise for homeowners to ignore updating one of the most important rooms in the house, particularly as more than one will be reflected in the eventual price of the property. In fact recent studies show that that an additional bathroom could potentially increase the value of a house by around 5%. Any bathroom project, whatever its size, will benefit from careful planning and good advice from installers. For a bathroom that doesn’t get much light then glass is a superb option to open up the space and create a larger feel to a small room. Equally, for a good sized bathroom then glass partitioning can really be used to its best advantage. For example, etched, painted or opaque glass panels provide privacy but if styled correctly will provide a feeling of more light and greater space. Mirrored panelling, striking glass shelving, walls and glass bowl sinks will make the room a place to luxuriate and enjoy. With so much need to relax and chill after a long day’s work these days, an upgrade that looks truly stunning will be easy to sell in to those with the budget to buy. Clean and simple lines look beautiful against stone, wooden or even glass flooring. Using glass to divide up larger bathrooms reflects natural light and will give the whole room a far more spacious feel. Great selling points for when the homeowner comes to sell.

With consumers fresh back off the beaches this is a really great time to approach homeowners regarding new extensions, replacement kitchens or the increasingly popular additional or new bathroom options to upgrade their homes. Whether people are looking to renovate before they sell a property or they simply want to improve their current home, there are a lot of potential projects out there during the autumn months. It does all very much depend on an individual’s circumstances but there are budgets of all sizes out there in the housing market for eagle-eyed builders and installers looking to approach property owners. The key will be the spend and the ultimate ROI that end users will gain from their investment as to whether the project inspires them to invest. Adding value and quality will be of paramount importance naturally, and for this sector there are so many types of installations that will prove successful to a building company or installer. Glass continues to be the dominant material in new design, particularly with bathroom renovations, which are a very popular upgrade for a home.

SMART ENERGY ~ THE NEW GREEN REVOLUTION IS EVOLVING

When it comes to energy efficiency, the ‘green building’ revolution is well and truly under way. Sustainable building is being driven by the environmentally conscious with good cause. Modern energy-saving construction is now a focus with the idea of bringing people and nature together in a more harmonious existence. The renovation of buildings is dramatically reducing damaging effects on the mental health and well- being of occupants. In terms of design this is a priority. Architectural concepts now look to harness the natural powers available with planning, construction and materials all affecting the whole lifecycle and energy capabilities of a modern commercial project. Doors and windows in particular need to maximise the daylight and control the transfer of heat both into and out of the building. As multi- functioning products they need to guarantee that energy consumption can be considerably reduced. Increasingly processors, architects and planners are working together to develop advanced energy efficient products that will adapt to a changing climate.

A great consideration for designers and planners is the reduction of energy consumption without losing the view through a window, particularly in relation to high rise working and living. As an essential component of a building, windows now need to be a multi-functioning material. Looking at renewable energy sources it is also important to remember that the ‘green’ revolution also relates to the reduction of energy consumption. As buildings today increasingly optimise energy they are more sustainable and ultimately these factors are now so important not just in terms of the planners but also the occupants. Already the UK has made a commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions to almost zero by 2050 in a bid to tackle climate change. It his hoped that emissions can be reduced by 80% as per the Climate Change Act in 2008. Some ‘green groups’ are warning however that as the global climate is changing so fast that it may already be too late to ensure that the world temperature rise stays well below 2C. There are now 160 countries that have pledged to cut emissions but more needs to be done if the aims of the Paris Agreement are to be met.

Soon through Industry 4.0 digitalisation and automation will mean buildings will be able to adapt to changing weather conditions on a daily basis. Where previously window design had been unchanged today they can be optimised for both hot and cold weather. Smart window technology is creating the ideal product to regulate heat and light transmittance and this is an exciting time for developers in this sector.

With that in mind designers and engineering companies across the construction and glazing sector are stepping up the game revising concepts and adapting new construction projects accordingly. Across Europe almost zero-energy homes are expected to be the ‘norm’ in the not too distant future. Revisions to the EU Regulations regarding a buildings overall energy performance will initially only affect new builds but there is an expectation that all buildings should be carbon neutral by 2050. Smart technology will undoubtedly come into play to make a building highly energy efficient. Heating, lighting and air conditioning will need to be AI managed to adapt to the changing aspects brought about by climate change.

RESOLVING THE HOUSING CRISIS

For those looking at getting onto the property ladder, it must be a bleak prospect to consider how and where to start. Adapting existing buildings that have been used for office space has been considered as an option but even then there are huge cost implications regarding deposits and mortgage criterion. Looking at the bigger picture beyond the house itself, there is an impact when looking at city expansions or suburban sprawling. Schools, health and welfare all play a huge part in the huge issue. Supplying to demand seems impossible to an ever- increasing population. For the more vulnerable in society there seems to be a never ending waiting list with forms and protocols that must be assessed and approved before anything can be actioned. Those requiring Housing Association schemes, graduates and younger professionals are all in a very similar boat, with conditions and pricing

making owning a home increasingly difficult. It never seems to end.

There have been calls for the more elderly to consider downsizing to address the housing shortage issue. Off-site manufacturing is repeatedly being raised as a suitable house building substitution that can offer space and eco-friendly alternatives for first time buyers. Perhaps prefabricated homes can create a feasible, alternative option that will help to minimise construction costs?

Naturally, there could be some who will query will quality standards in respect of the finished home.

Yet this style of property is not the design from yesteryear that offered little to the occupant in terms of thermal guarantees.

Contemporary prefabricated buildings have now started to make their mark in the building community. And… they all need windows and doors! For small scale developments they offer a viable option for the eco-conscious communities that prize carbon neutral options as a ‘must have’. Perhaps previously, prefabricated homes came with a ‘stain’ that they were never as good as a traditionally built property but it would seem that the tide is turning in its favour as solution for the needs of modern society. A lot of companies are evaluating the opportunities that prefabs can offer - as a solution to the housing crisis they do offer first time buyers a solid route forward .

Traditional housing takes months to complete, however prefabs can be created in just a few weeks. Things have changed and so have building standards so hopefully the finished prefab is now a serious contender. A one bedroom eco-home can be purchased from dwelle.co.uk a Manchester-based company. Here sustainable homes that are quick to construct, provide an striking finished home at an affordable price. Simple and clean design provides a home that can be enjoyed quickly. Huf Haus homes offer stunning architectural features including glass elements that ‘extend from gable to floor depth’ and can be planned with no extra charge. Thermal insulation and temperature control are all incorporated into the prefabricated housing options here. The bonus? They are affordable and they look exceptionally different to the prefabs from the Forties.

Buying the land to put it on of course, is a completely different issue.

LINIAR BOOSTS SALES TEAM TO HANDLE EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH Innovative PVCu systems company Liniar has today announced the appointment of Mike Hobson as Regional Sales Director within the Liniar team. Hobson is highly experienced within the sector, having 19 years’ experience at Masco UK with Duraflex systems, and prior to that at Deceuninck and Plasmo. He joins Liniar at a time when two of Scotland’s largest fabricators have commenced manufacture of the system, with installers North of the border increasingly turning to the easy-to-fit window and door system. Add this to a consistent sales growth of more than 10% per year for the last 10 years, and it’s clear to see how Mike can add value to Liniar’s overall customer support experience.

Liniar Group Sales Director Nigel Bishop welcomes Mike to the fold, commenting, “Mike comes highly recommended to us, having a great reputation for ethics and core values very similar to those of Liniar. He’s been taken on to help customers develop their own sales, and will be supporting Howard Hirst as our customer base in the North continues to grow at a fast rate.” Mike has already been introduced to the Liniar product range and spent time with some of the brand’s key teams, so he’ll be able to hit the ground running. He’s delighted to be joining Liniar, saying, “Since its launch into the industry, the Liniar range has been seen as one of the most innovative window and door systems. Now I’ve spent a couple of weeks in the business, I can confirm that it’s a philosophy that runs throughout the company, and this means the product range is second to none. “The investment made in the site, facilities, machinery, stock and people is clear, and there’s a passion about the range that’s obvious to see – I’m eager to get going and help even more fabricators, installers and specifiers understand how they can grow their own sales with Liniar.”

CMS STAFF TRAIN AS MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS

Seventeen members of the CMS Window Systems workforce have successfully trained as mental health first aiders by completing the ground-breaking Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) course. Staff from throughout the business came together to complete the 12-hour SMHFA course by NHS Health Scotland, which teaches important skills for providing help to people experiencing thoughts of suicide or mental health problems such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. The training was organised as part of a wider programme to improve wellbeing within the organisation and give mental health the same support framework as physical health and safety. found. The knowledge presented and understanding developed in the SMHFA course helps to remove stigma and fear by giving confidence to individuals to approach a colleague in distress. By completing the SMHFA course, the seventeen CMS employees have developed their awareness of attitudes towards and understanding of mental health, the recovery message, listening skills and how to offer first aid to someone experiencing a problem. Mental health first aiders provide an initial response to distress prior to professional help can being

David Ritchie, CEO of CMS Window Systems said: “Awareness of mental health in the workplace is thankfully increasing right across the building and manufacturing industries, but we must continue to look for ways to reduce the enormous harm that mental health problems can cause. That’s why the SMHFA programme is so important and it is tremendous to see so many volunteers from across our organisation choose to develop the skills needed to identify the early signs of mental health problems amongst their colleagues.” Employing more than 320 people at its main factory, recycling centre and HQ at Castlecary near Glasgow, and its production facilities in Kirkcaldy and East Kilbride, CMS Window Systems is one of Scotland’s largest designers, manufacturers and installers of windows, doors and curtain walling. It provides high performance PVCu and aluminium products to the social housing, housebuilding, commercial and trade sectors across Scotland and increasingly UK-wide.
