A semi-autobiographical film set in the Northern Ireland capital in the late 1960s. At the centre of the film is Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks and a blossoming romance. But as the 1960s stagger to a close, Buddy’s childhood dreams turn into a nightmare. Simmering social discontent suddenly explodes in Buddy’s own street and escalates, fast. First a masked attack, then a riot, and finally a city-wide conflict, with religion fanning the flames further afield. Catholics vs Protestants, loving neighbours suddenly deadly foes. Buddy must make sense of this chaotic new landscape of lockdown, peopled by heroes and villains – that once existed only on the cinema screen, but now threaten to upend everything he knows and loves – as an epic struggle plays out in his own backyard. Can his father be the hero he needs him to be? Will his mother sacrifice her past in order to protect her family’s future? How can his beloved grandparents be kept safe? And how can he love the girl of his dreams? The answers lie in Buddy’s compelling, funny, poignant and heart-breaking journey through riots, violence, the joy and despair of family relationships and the agony of first love, all accompanied by the dancing, music and laughter that only the Irish can muster when the world turns upside down. Dame Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Caitriona Balfe, Jude Hill. PREMIERES 3RD  CLICK TO SEE MORE

The multifaceted talent of the Irish-born English actor, director, and writer, Sir Kenneth Branagh is on full display this February as he looms large over two films releasing in cinemas this month. He serves as writer and director of Belfast , and as director and lead actor for the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery novel Death on the Nile . Belfast is a movie straight from Branagh's own experiences as a boy – charting a path towards adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside down with the onset of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. His stable and loving community and everything he thought he understood about life is changed forever, but joy, laughter, music and the formative magic of the movies remain. Belfast is an uplifting film in spite of the story’s tragic details, and the deeply personal project is on-track for Awards Season success, with its directing, script writing, and performances being recognised, and it has already won Branagh the Best Screenplay Golden Globe. The past two years have been a time riddled both with anxieties and the reflection that can accompany them, and Branagh channeled his unrest and contemplations into Belfast – a black-and- white tribute to his childhood. “I felt at the beginning of the pandemic, when I was writing this, that we needed to be a little kinder to ourselves,” he has said. “We all needed to appreciate and value however imperfect – and every family, I suppose, is bound to be – the gifts that we’ve been given.” Read more about Death on the Nile page 7

An experienced sustainability strategist and vintage fashion lover, Jacinta FitzGerald is the programme director for inspiring local initiative, Mindful Fashion NZ, a collective of Kiwi design- ers, suppliers and manufacturers keen to reduce their social and environmental impact. She also runs MakeGood, a con- sultancy that works with innovative apparel sector brands in New Zealand and globally to put sustainable practices at their core, and seeks to ensure the old model of take-make-waste, which exploits people and the planet along the way, is a thing of the past. She was introduced to current Mindful Fashion NZ board members, designer Kate Sylvester and her husband, Wayne Conway via a client in the United Kingdom, when MFNZ was still in its infancy, “so I was able to become involved very early on in the strategising about what an organisation that wanted to take on sustainability in a collective way would look like”. She went on to become one of the founding board members before taking on the role of Programme Director, which she is thriving in today. FitzGerald had a long career in fashion working as a designer and patternmaker for a number of companies, before step- ping away in 2012 after becoming disillusioned by the indus- try’s lack of commitment to more planet-conscious practices. “I felt like it was heading towards total annihilation – for want of a better word – so I stepped away and went back to university,” she explains. There she completed a research paper into sustainability in the fashion industry, which put her onto the trajectory of where she is today. FitzGerald has completed project-based work with many global and local brands, and says her international connections have been in- valuable to her work with MFNZ today. The or- ganisation recently published a Sustainability Insights Report into our fashion industry, which was a first for New Zealand. The incredibly de- tailed report demonstrates the collective progress being made in the New Zealand fashion industry, and also presents a path for- ward for positive sustainability action. One of the main reasons it came about was to raise the profile of the industry in order for the likes of the government and consumers to take notice, “because we needed to be taken se- riously if any change was going to happen,” says FitzGerald. “The report was essential for data gathering in particular,” she adds, “and determining the GDP of industry and its economic value.” Even before the report came out, the MFNZ team went out to the industry at large to find out what designers and suppliers wanted them to do as an organisation, “and what came back was a) the need to ensure a skilled workforce in New Zealand, and b) a need to help people better understand sustainability and how they could pursue it within their busi- ness”. The report has given the organisation an idea of the baseline, “and we completed a survey to see where everybody is at. We’ve got 68 members and now we know what they’re doing and can see where the great- est need is, and we will be completing that survey every year to show progress over time”. She said that one thing the report did was demonstrate exactly how much certain busi- nesses were doing in terms of sustainability that the organisation wasn’t really aware of. “Lots of our members are doing incredible ini- tiatives around how they deal with textile waste, for example,” says FitzGerald, “and it was just so cool to be able to uncover some of these stories and then be able to share them. The report became about data but also about the people just getting out there and making a change, which was fantastic.” Talk turns to the topic of greenwashing, which is rife in both the beauty and fashion industries internationally, but thankfully not so much here. Is greenwashing the result of deliberate misrepresentation, or just a lack of understand-

ing? “I think it’s a little bit of both,” says the in- dustry veteran, “and I’ve seen greenwashing being commandeered as a marketing tool across so many different industries. Businesses have to be so careful about how they com- municate what they’re doing, and I think people are now really fearful of getting it wrong.” She goes on to say that there are so many facets of sustainability that need to be considered, “and you need a holistic ap- proach. The big impacts aren’t happening at the packaging stage with say a reusable bag, it goes much deeper than that.” When asked to call out New Zealand design- ers or labels that she sees as emerging as real industry leaders in the area of sustainability, FitzGerald says it is difficult to name just a few as so many are taking very different ap- proaches to the issue. “Some have commit- ted to just using natural fibres that can be composted at the end of their life,” she ex- plains, “while others have addressed their textile waste and how to better work with that. There are a lot of different ways to get it right, but it takes a lot of integrity and looking at every stage of your supply chain so that you are designing products with people and planet in mind.” She says more and more businesses are becoming so much more than just the bottom line, “and are about creating good and doing good. Those businesses are the leaders in the industry and need all the support we can give them”. For many on lower incomes, or struggling, sustainability is the last thing on their minds when it comes to feeding and clothing their families. How does she see fashion in New Zealand addressing that part of society? “Sustainability is a way of thinking, and our role as active members of society is trying to support that,” says FitzGerald, “which comes down to voting with your wallet and choos- ing where and how you spend what money you do have.” For those who may have less disposable income, she says that the solution is buying the best you can, and then taking care of that. “We need to stop treating things as dispos- able. If you can’t afford that expensive organic cotton t-shirt that’s okay, but by looking after the t-shirt you do have, you’re being sustain- able. It’s that simple.”

LEGENDARY AUSTRALIAN ACTOR, ERIK THOMSON TALKS TO WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH ABOUT HIS ROLE IN THE BITING SATIRE SERIES AFTERTASTE . Easton West is a an internationally-renowned yet volatile celebrity chef, who has a spectacular fall from grace and is forced to return to his hometown in the Adelaide Hills, Australia. He is a vastly different character to the charming and eloquent Erik Thomson, the seasoned Australian talent who inhabits his role in the comedy Aftertaste . It’s Australia Day in the countryside outside Adelaide when I speak with Thomson, and South Australia is really feeling the brunt of Omicron’s arrival after being relatively unscathed for most of the pandemic. “It’s been such a funny start to the year for all of us,” says the actor, “but I’m most definitely in back-to- work mode and can’t wait to get out of lockdown and moving again.” It was Thomson who bought the production of After- taste to his hometown of the Adelaide Hills, “so I could just drive to work for a change instead of having to fly to different loca- tions. We filmed in August 2020, and were the first show to go into production after Covid-19 first hit”. Actors travelling inter- state were required to spend two weeks in quarantine before joining the production, which Thomson says bought a “special kind of madness to the set” as they turned up after spending a fortnight with only themselves for company. “It infused the first series with a little bit of crazy, which I think suited the show quite nicely,” adds Thomson with a laugh, “and we start shooting the second series soon, so hopefully we can replicate that.” The character of Easton West is your archetypal nightmare celebrity chef, driven by ego and a god complex that most definitely gets him into trouble. When asked if he based him upon any particular current kitchen nightmares or if he’s a col- lage of generally appalling behaviour, Thomson admits that Gordon Ramsay was a definite point of reference. “We really wanted to delve into the archetype and drew from a few dif- YES CHEF!

ferent sources,” he elaborates, “and never named names to protect ourselves from lawsuits! I think people definitely know the type of person we’re taking aim at.” He says that beyond just taking pot shots at an egomaniac, they sought to go deeper into recent developments in society and the impact the likes of the #metoo movement had on men like Easton. “Discussions were happening around power and gen- der, and it is hopefully the beginning of the end of an era when it comes to abusing that. We see Easton running by the old rule book and then being forced to adapt and learn the new rule book, and perhaps changing within himself as a result.” After years of playing the likes of dependable Dave Rafter, Thomson says he relished the chance to play an absolute rat- bag. “Playing the affable father figure is something I can pretty much do in my sleep as I’ve done so much of it, so playing a character like Easton really invigorated my love of acting,” says the actor. “I got to exercise muscles that hadn’t been exercised for a long time, and even though there are moments when Eas- ton is very hard to like, I think we had to make that bold choice early on so we had somewhere to shift away from.” When a seasoned chef is at the cutting board, it’s almost im- possible to take your eyes off their considerable knife skills. Did Thomson put in the hard yards – and potentially his digits on the line – learning a few tricks before cameras started rolling? “I’m afraid it would take a lifetime of practice to look like a

Michelin chef,” he says with a laugh, and will neither confirm nor deny whether or not a ‘hand double’ was present on set. He did ben- efit however from the skills of local chefs who were not working due to the pandemic, “and we were able to employ several of them full time to prepare and plate dishes so they were at the standard demanded of a top chef. That food porn element was essential through- out the production, with Netflix’s Chef’s Table one of our key influences”. He said his main role was “eating lots of incredible food, with a little knife work on the side!” We talk about the points at which a kitchen service and a stage performance intersect, the choreography that takes place between chefs and other members of the kitchen staff. “When the first meal goes out it’s like the cur- tain opens, and then comes down when the last dish hits the pass,” says Thomson. “Both end the night with a real adrenalin overload, with so much passion and artistry involved.” “All of that pressure results in a character like Easton, who really is a product of the world he moves through every night.”
