To Whom it May Concern:

I am pleased that the BC Ministry of Education and WE will be continuing our longstanding partnership and expanding our focus for this year to include mental health and wellness. WE’s leadership on creating resources for educators to use in our province will help to support teachers and students in the classroom and by extension, families who often find themselves looking for additional supports. WE’s focus on bringing awareness to students about global challenges, issues that they may have never fully understood until participating in WE learning activities, can help shape future community service. One specific example that resonated for me, personally, is the linkage between fresh water and a girl’s education in developing countries. Last year, the Ministry of Education partnered with WE to have a water walk at the BC Legislature. Three hundred students from the Victoria area, the Ministry of Education staff and the Minister of Education recreated the journey girls take to help bring fresh water to their families in developing countries. Through the work WE has done, girls now have access to fresh water and an education as they are not spending their days walking back and forth to a fresh water source. Participating in that walk in British Columbia and then doing the actual water walk this summer in Kenya on my personal holidays solidified our responsibility to continue to support developing countries in a sustainable way. I was able to meet local girls completing high school and ones currently enrolled in college, the excitement for their future was so empowering and to recognize BC students have helped support through WE Schools partnership was extremely gratifying. We are continually reminded about the power of education in both Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Calls to Action and as a key indicator for social determinants of health. I am excited to represent the Minister of Education at this year’s WE Day Vancouver, and thank you for the work WE does for our students here in BC and globally.
