A NOTE FROM SYLVIA A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS
I want to begin my letter with gratitude for your support over the last several months. You called members of Congress. You became a sustaining member. You shared the importance of public media with your friends and family. Your support ensures that TPT can continue providing trusted, essential programming and services now and in the future. Although federal funding is gone, we are here to stay – and that is because of viewers like you. This is a pivotal time of transformation for TPT and for public media in Minnesota. As our plans take shape, we will keep you, our most loyal supporters, informed every step of the way. As we turn a new page and autumn settles in, I want to share some powerful programming highlights you can look forward to this September. Viewer favorite “American Experience” returns with three compelling history documentaries centered on the American presidency. On September 2, we begin with “Nixon,” an unflinching look at one of the most divisive and complex leaders in U.S. history. Then, on September 9 and 16, we showcase the two-part documentary “FDR,” exploring how Franklin Delano Roosevelt transformed the role of the presidency and redefined the relationship between the American people and their government. On September 30, “Hard Hat Riot” revisits a violent 1970 clash between anti- war protestors and construction workers in New York City—a flashpoint that exposed deep societal divisions during the Vietnam War era. I’m also thrilled to share the debut of a new TPT original series: “You Are Here.” From the team that brought you “Lost Twin Cities,” this place-based anthology explores the people, places and histories that have shaped Minnesota. The premiere features the vibrant and often surprising stories of Minnehaha Falls, the sacred site of Bdote and the rich cultural legacy of St. Paul’s West Side. Premiering as a one-hour film on September 23, you can also stream three distinct stories on the PBS App and the Twin Cities PBS YouTube channel. Thank you for standing with us during the most challenging time in our history. Your continued support is not just appreciated—it is the reason we are able to continue serving our community with trusted storytelling. It truly means the world to us.

THE MOMENT IS NOW: WHY VIEWERS BELIEVE IN TPT COMMUNITY MEMBERS SHARE THEIR STORIES OF HOW TPT HAS IMPACTED THEIR LIVES.
In July, Congress voted to eliminate federal funding for public media stations across the country, including Twin Cities PBS (TPT), but our work continues. With key service areas that revolve around enriching children’s media, emergency public health and safety alerts, and local coverage of public affairs, plus history and arts & culture storytelling, we are looking ahead to TPT’s next chapter in serving our community. Over the last several months, we’ve heard from many of you about how much you appreciate and depend on our mission to enrich lives and strengthen community through the power of media.
This month, we are highlighting a few of the individuals who have shared their testimonials in response to a simple question: How does TPT impact your life?
FAVORITE SHOWS: “Masterpiece: Poldark” and “Jim Crow of the North”
As a teacher, TPT has been an awesome resource for my classroom. I used lessons connected to specific programs, and as a teacher in an arts school, I have really appreciated the local artist stories that are archived from “Minnesota Original.” I have also brought students in grades 7 through 12 to visit the station on several occasions. My students have enjoyed the experience of seeing creatives in action and making the connection between the shows they watched as little kids and programming that connects to their communities now.
Arielle
FAVORITE SHOWS: “NOVA” and “Masterpiece Mystery: Grantchester”
TPT provides a wide range of high-quality programming without commercial interruptions. I appreciate being able to watch programming that is intellectually stimulating and that helps me become more curious about a range of areas, from science to cooking to history. I also find watching TPT to be calming for me, similar to reading a good book.

FAVORITE SHOW: “American Experience”
TPT has impacted me since childhood. Shows like “Sesame Street” and “The Electric Company” reinforced what I was learning in school, while “Zoom” sparked my curiosity —and even taught me to speak another language, Ubbi Dubbi. Today, I continue to turn to TPT for engaging content like “American Experience,” which brings history to life and deepens my understanding of the world. TPT continues to inspire my curiosity and love of learning — whether it's about global cultures, food, history, or travel.
Linda
FAVORITE SHOW: “Sesame Street”
TPT is one of those things that just feels like home. It brings thoughtful, educational content into our lives and sparks great conversations with my kids — it’s something we can all enjoy and learn from together.
Mahogany
You've heard from Arielle, Joel, Linda and Mahogany. So, we want to hear from you. How does TPT impact your life? Make your voice heard and support the crucial work that our station is doing for communities across Minnesota. Now is the moment to give.

From Haute Cuisine to Home Comfort Chef Mike Brown’s Refried Beans Anchor an Episode of “Relish” Season 6
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Soak & Drain Beans: Soak beans overnight. Drain when ready to cook. 2. Sauté the Base: In a large pot, heat 3 tbsp pork lard. Add shallots, garlic, poblano, bacon, and spices. Sweat gently until soft and golden. 3. Add Liquid: Add 4 cups water and chicken base; stir to dissolve. 4. Add Beans: Add soaked beans. Add more water to cover by 1 inch. Place a parchment “cartouche” directly on the surface to limit evaporation. 5. Simmer: Cook gently 4–6 hours, stirring occasionally. Reduce until liquid sits 3–4 inches below the beans. 6. Mash & Finish: Heat 3 tbsp pork lard separately until hot, then pour into beans. Mash about 75% of the beans—leave some texture. 7. Season: Add kosher salt to taste. Serve warm.
The sixth season of “Relish,” the James Beard Media Award-winning food and culture series from Twin Cities PBS, premiered on June 23 with six new episodes that explore the ties between food, heritage and identity. Hosted by Chef Yia Vang, the series continues its mission to unearth the personal stories behind the dishes we love. One standout episode features a shift from fine dining to family kitchens with Chef Mike Brown of Travail Kitchen and Amusements. Brown — alongside fellow Travail Chef Bob Gerken — is known for pushing culinary boundaries with imaginative, upscale fare. But in this episode, the chefs hit pause on the fancy food and return to their roots, stepping into the kitchen with their moms to cook childhood favorites. For Brown, that means showcasing a deeply flavorful, slow- simmered pot of refried beans.
Here’s his take on a family classic:
Mike Brown’s Refried Beans Serves a crowd; perfect for sharing
INGREDIENTS
1 lb dry pinto beans, soaked overnight and drained 3 tbsp pork lard, for sautéing 3 tbsp shallots, diced 3 tbsp garlic, diced 3 tbsp poblano pepper, diced 3 tbsp raw bacon, diced 1 tsp white pepper 1 tsp black pepper ½ tsp cumin 2 tsp garlic powder 1 tbsp chicken base (e.g., Better Than Bouillon) 4–5 cups water 3 tbsp hot pork lard (for finishing) Kosher salt, to taste
Season 6 of “Relish” showcases dishes that honor family legacies and cultural pride — from King Cake and kimchi jjigae to sourdough and sambusas. Whether fancy or familiar, each recipe is a conversation starter. Stream Chef Mike Brown's episode, and all episodes, on the PBS App.
"Relish" is made possible by Minnesota's Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

Finding Your Third Place By Jackson Rainer
The world in which we now live is fragmented and polarized. Much of what we knew as the common good has been abandoned in favor of the entitled view of "I want what I want, and I want it now, regardless of the expense it may mean to anyone else." Social scientists studying this phenomenon consistently report the loss of community as a significant contributor to loneliness and a diminished sense of personal agency.
Home — the first place — is where people find family and those with whom they live. Work – the second place — is where people, before retirement, may spend most of their waking time. Oldenberg wrote that third places are distinct anchors of community life, facilitating and fostering broader, more creative interaction with others. He argues that third places are crucial for healthy social engagement. A third place allows a person to relax in public, encounter familiar faces and make new acquaintances. It is each person's "Cheers" bar, a place where everybody knows your name.
"I want what I want, and I want it now, regardless of the expense it may mean to anyone else."
The Cemetery Club
Bruce Wynn is a 60-something solo ager who works as the music director and organist for a large urban church. He describes his third place: "I started this little group some years ago with my friend and next-door neighbor, Michael Smallwood. At the beginning when we would get together, we realized how much comfort we found in our friendship. We brought a lot of good conversation to the table and progressively invited others to gather with us, without any pretense. Along the way, one of us remembered our grandfather's adage, 'We both have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel ...'."
Some years ago, the sociologist Ray Oldenberg researched, then coined, the term "the third place." He said this third place refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home (the "first place") and work (the "second place").
As Wynn said, “Everybody is welcome. We haven't reached out much, and people still find us."
"Everybody is welcome. We haven't reached out much, and people still find us."

My Lonely War Against Stuff By Francis Flaherty
I was a messy young man. In grad school, I lost a rocking chair in my room. It was obscured by a mound of jackets and sweaters, months of newspapers, a large frayed knapsack, and many fliers I'd gotten protesting apartheid in South Africa, which was still going strong. Of course you can't really lose a rocking chair for very long, especially in a small dorm room, but it did take me a few seconds to locate it. That was enough time for the friend who was visiting me to spin the story of Frank's lost rocking chair. Of course, this tale grew and soon passed into family legend. But I mended my messy ways long ago. Maybe I just got tired of losing things in the morass. Whatever the reason, the new me likes a leaner approach to life. My loved ones say I have the soul of a housemaid, with an annoying impulse to recycle, dispose, consolidate, pare, curate, cull and prune. They say proudly that they are Keepers — and that I am definitely not a Keeper. "Honey, you can edit your writing, but you cannot edit life itself, " my wife frequently says during my many cleanups. This sounds profound, I tell her, but it isn't.
Naturally, when he couldn't find the peeler, both he and my wife looked pointedly at me. I was tried, convicted and sentenced of ejecting the peeler, even though I was just innocently sitting there reading the newspaper. Now, truth be told, I did recycle the silver vegetable peeler, and the reason was that it didn't work anymore. But I didn't tell them this. Instead, I just jumped up and rifled through the crammed kitchen drawers and quickly found no fewer than four other vegetable peelers. This is why I remember the vegetable peeler incident. Because I found incontrovertible proof that our household is bloated with stuff.
"Honey, you can edit your writing, but you cannot edit life itself"

It's hard being the neat one. Years back, I remember, our then-teenage son was developing a fondness for homemade smoothies. He was looking for our silver vegetable peeler.
