TEXARKANA MAGAZINE

Where was your favorite place to eat in Texarkana?

TXK ROOTS Julie Roberts Goudie Julie Roberts Goudie is the owner of Julie Goudie Design LLC and lived in the Texarkana area for a total of 24 years. She spent her early years in Texarkana, growing up in a close-knit neighborhood where she formed lasting friendships. Many of those connections remain a meaningful part of her life today. Julie attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and later returned to Texarkana to take graduate classes at Texarkana

The A&W Drive-In on 35th Street was a classic. We loved piling in the car for root beer floats and burgers. And of course, no list is complete without a good catfish restaurant. There’s nothing like crispy fried catfish, hushpuppies, and coleslaw to remind me of home. The Hush Puppy was a favorite of my family in the 1960s. Pier 27 was a popular spot in the 80s and 90s. What was the teen hangout when you lived here? Tastee Freeze on Summerhill Road was the teen hangout of choice. We’d cruise over, hang out in the parking lot, and connect with friends—people from Arkansas High and Texas High would meet up. Were you a Hawk, Leopard, Razorback, or Tiger? Woo Pig Sooie! Texas High was our rival—lots of fun stories. Who is someone from Texarkana who impacted your life? There are numerous friends, teachers, and parents of friends that I could mention here. What do you love about Texarkana? Texarkana is the perfect-size town. The people are incredibly friendly and kind. People care about each other and look out for one another. I LOVE that! I also love the pine trees and the subtle changes in elevation, which I feel when driving around town. I love the red dirt. I love State Line. I love seeing people I know when I am out and about. What do you miss about Texarkana? My family and all the things that I love about Texarkana. What words do you live by? “Keep your mind where your body is.” My dad told me this once or twice.

College while working evenings at Doc Alexander’s. She then moved back to Dallas to work for Kelly Services before returning to Texarkana to marry and teach seventh grade at North Heights Junior High. At Wadley, she helped establish the foundation, developed its board, and led fundraising efforts. She completed executive training at the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Business and participated in Leadership Texarkana, gaining valuable experience in nonprofit leadership. Julie later married a Houston native she met through her work at Wadley and relocated to Houston, where she has lived for over 30 years. In Houston, Julie built

a successful interior design business. She turned her creative passion into a full- service studio, serving clients across the region. Today, she continues to lead Julie Goudie Design LLC and remains dedicated to delivering thoughtful, functional design solutions.

TXK Roots is Texarkana Magazine ’s forum to highlight and honor Texarkana natives who have accomplished big things in the world. These folks may have relocated, but they took the values, education, work ethic, and creativity instilled in them by growing up in this unique border city and used these qualities to blaze extraordinary trails. We asked them to share their thoughts about growing up here. No matter how far from Texarkana they may find themselves, we will always consider them our neighbors and we are proud to claim them as forever members of our extended Texarkana community. After all, “everyone is famous in their hometown!”
