The three partners of the bureau belonged to the same generation of the School of Architecture at the Catholic University. Furthermore, they came from the same high school: the Liceo Alemán (German High School). They shared both personal and emotional ties, besides a common formation that most likely facilitated the operation of the bureau in a significant degree. At school, architects like Emilio Duhart, Mario Pérez de Arce and Alberto Cruz, all graduated in the early 40s, had been classmates and friends. It is therefore a generation that has left a lasting impression in the Chilean architectural milieu. Seen in a broader context, they are also contemporaneous with the generation of architects such as Isidro Suárez and Jaime Bendersky, formed at the University of Chile. VCH mainly receives commissions for housing and participate in competitions in order to obtain more substantial orders. Of particular significance is the competition for a swimming pool and club in the town of Rocas de Santo Domingo, which they win in 1945. At this seaside resort designed by the office of Smith Solar and Smith Miller, with whom Héctor Valdés had been professionally involved, they had already done a number of summer houses through which they refine a certain architectural language. The swimming club, which combines concrete vaults and stone masonry as well as regular volumes and organic forms, is the first commission for service architecture of a greater scale that the office obtains and constructs. The proposal for the School of Medicine of the University of Chile cannot win the 1950 competition, and surrounds them in a loud controversy for dissenting from the jury that awarded the rather classic project by Juan Martínez. The Tobalaba Aerodrome competition proposal, which they did win in 1953, will not be built.
