also extended into the area of professional association, specifically to the Colegio de Arquitectos (Architects Guild), where he had begun working at a young age. Between 1971 and 1973 Valdés serves as president in a particularly difficult period characterized by political tensions. From that position Valdés led to the creation of CA magazine, contributing significantly to the national architectural debate. He also participated in the National Monuments Council. Considering altogether the time dedicated to the university and his public and professional associative activities, he devoted to them a significant portion of his career, moving fluidly between the public and private sector. Fernando Castillo began his teaching activities at the Catholic University in 1959, almost at the same time Héctor Valdés ceased his own. As a teacher he was always innovative and entrepreneurial, encouraging close relationships between his students and the professional and social reality of the country. In 1967 he joins a re-structuring committee for the School of Architecture, created in response to the demands for reform coming from the students. Later, and after the student protests spread to the whole university, Castillo became rector. He remains at the head until 1973, when the military government appointed delegate rectors to all Chilean universities. His teaching will then proceed abroad: he taught in the schools of Cambridge and the Central University of Venezuela, and the enthusiasm that his personal charisma awoke in students was always evident.
