An Office Full of Hellos and Goodbyes

When you run your own business, whether it’s a dental practice, a law firm, or a retail store, you don’t expect any employee to stick around forever. And that’s okay. When I bring someone onto my team, they know their job is to help the practice run to the best of their ability, and my job is to help them develop into the person they want to become during their time with the practice. For this reason, we often go through periods of change around the office. And right now, we have some big changes brewing! Dr. Noor Almudallal’s career has entered a new stage. Her last day at the office was a few weeks ago, and we all learned a lot during our time together. We’re in the process of bringing in a new associate, so it’s a pretty exciting time. Two other members of our team are also entering new stages in their lives. Emily, one of my dental assistants, has been accepted to dental school, and one of our dental hygienists, Janae, just welcomed her second baby. I could tell you how excited I am for them, but I think it would be best if I let Emily and Janae take it from here.

a due date of June 26, our first child’s half- birthday. Mac is two and a half years older than his new sibling and he was excited to learn he’s going to be a big brother, though I couldn’t help but wonder if he’s still going to be excited after the baby arrives. There are some new challenges ahead of us. A lot of people want to know if we’re having a boy or a girl. Well, my husband and I decided to keep the gender a secret, even from ourselves. We’re even keeping our name choices a secret until the delivery. And now I get to let you in on a little secret: We work on our newsletter well in advance, so at the time of writing, I don’t know if I’ll be welcoming a son or daughter yet! By the time you’re reading this, though, the baby will have arrived, so if you want to hear more about the littlest member of the office, feel free to ask next time you’re in! I’m sure there will be plenty of pictures to share even before I return to work in September. - Janae

After working at Dr. Schermer’s office, I have fallen in love with general and cosmetic dentistry. I have been able to work with not only an impressive team, but with a mentor who has inspired me to go after my dental career head-on. I’ve also been very lucky to have had the support of so many people during this time and to have been part of such a great practice.

Thank you to Dr. Schermer, the team, and our patients for this great experience. I’ll miss you all! But who knows? Maybe I’ll be back here in four years as an associate.

Any parent knows that having your first baby is a pretty stressful time. And any parent with two kids knows that having your second baby is also stressful, but for completely different reasons.

I’ll be starting dental school at Midwestern University’s Downers Grove campus in the fall, and I cannot even begin to describe how excited I am! I knew from the moment I toured the campus that it was where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life learning how to be a dentist.

My husband and I were so excited to learn we were expecting our second child, with

For Teenagers: Family Dinner Party

Cooking teaches so many important skills: math, science, nutrition, concentration, cultural understanding, following directions, creativity, time management, and more. Even better, it doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like fun. Encourage your older children to take the reins for preparing regular meals throughout the summer. You can pick guiding themes, like “a trip to Mexico” or “pasta party,” but let them choose the recipes and prep the meals on their own. For the Entire Family: An Educational Field Trip Field trips always inspire excitement in students, and you’ll find the same goes for your family members. You can tailor your destination to the interests of your kids for maximum engagement. If you have a family of art lovers, head to a museum for some inspiration and discussion. Kids who prefer the outdoors will enjoy a nature walk or hike. You can bring along a field guide to identify flora and fauna. These trips may not pack the thrill of a water park, but they’re fun in an entirely different way.

Learning That Doesn’t Feel Like School

Mentally Stimulating Activities for Summer

For Little Ones: Homemade Bubbles

Every summer, parents across the country have to deal with the same delicate problem. They want to make sure their kids continue to learn without feeling like they’re being assigned tasks. After all, summer homework is every child’s worst nightmare. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on math problems and book reports to keep your child’s development from taking a two-month vacation. Here are a few mentally stimulating activities that are as educational as they are fun.

Bubbles fascinate young children, so why not spend a day making your own solution and experimenting with different types of bubbles? The formula is simple: 1 part dish soap (Dawn or Joy work best) to 10 parts water. Optionally, you can also include 1/4 part glycerin. The process of making the solution will teach ratios, and finding creative ways to blow bubbles fosters problem-solving skills and creative thinking.

Simple Tricks for a New Smile 2 Ways t o Tr ans f o rm You r Smi l e Wi t hou t Or t hodon t i cs

What does it take to transform your smile? Years of orthodontics? Complicated oral surgery? What about a single dentist appointment? If you have been thinking about ways to improve your smile this summer, here are two tried-and-true methods that you can accomplish in almost no time at all. Give Your Pearly Whites Some TLC Have you ever put on a white shirt and noticed your teeth aren’t as clean as you thought? It’s a startling realization, one that may make us less likely to laugh or smile lest we reveal our stained, yellowing teeth. Unless you live on water and clear gelatin, even people who brush and floss regularly can find their teeth becoming stained. It’s time to look into whitening treatments.

We recommend skipping whitening toothpastes, which use abrasive materials to scrub away stains, damaging the enamel in the process. Instead, consider an effective in-office whitening treatment. Conducted by a professional, in-office whitening can remove years of stains, giving you a brighter, more beautiful smile without needlessly damaging your teeth. Ditch the ‘Silver’ Fillings For almost a century, dentists used amalgam fillings to fix cavities. Though sometimes called silver fillings, amalgam fillings are actually a combination of metals, including silver, tin, copper, and a small amount of mercury. While amalgam fillings are safe and effective, they certainly aren’t pretty. Amalgam fillings grow darker over time as they rust

and corrode, and if you have a lot of them, the inside of your mouth could look like it’s full of Dalmatian spots. Fortunately, unsightly metal fillings aren’t your only option anymore. Dr. Jason Schermer can replace cracked or dark amalgam fillings with natural-looking white fillings. Often made of either composite resin or porcelain, white fillings can be made to match your teeth, protecting them from decay and ensuring your smile is noticed for all the right reasons. It doesn’t take a lot to rejuvenate your smile. Give Dr. Schermer a call at (440) 483-1003 and learn how simple it can be to enjoy a brand-new smile today.

Must-See Swimming Holes of the World

Secret Swimming Holes of the World EXCLUSIVE SPOTS YOU MUST SEE TO BELIEVE

Summertime is for swimming, but why settle for a community pool when you can have access to the most beautiful swimming locales in the world? These three exclusive, little-known spots are sure to take your breath away. Hali’i Falls, Hawaii With its spiral staircase of waterfalls, this remote jungle location offers up more than one unique spot to take a plunge. Visitors never fail to be awestruck by the deep blue-green hue of each pool created by the four cascading waterfalls. Hali’i means “to spread out,” which is precisely what each waterfall does, showcasing a serene experience unlike any other. But the beauty of this one-of-a-kind experience is only

outdone by its exclusivity. To reach these pools, you’ll have to hike through dense forest, deep marshes, and wide-open pastures of sugar cane. Dos Ojos, Mexico The Spanish translation of the name for this magical system of caves is “two eyes,” and you’ll want to have yours checked after you see this swimming hole. When limestone bedrock collapses, a sinkhole called a “cenote” is formed. The unearthed water from the natural aquifer balances a color palette of earth tones with the most majestic shades of blue you’ll ever behold. The calling cards for these bodies of water are the Blue Eye and the Black Eye. Both offer unforgettable experiences, but the price of entry

is a hefty sense of adventure. You’ll need a full set of scuba gear to get to either hole. The Baths, Virgin Gorda A day in the Caribbean is like living every moment inside a beautiful pastel painting. The elegance of this location in the British Virgin Islands will make you feel like you’ve been transported into a cathedral. The large boulders and natural rock formations create shallow caves that will captivate your eyes as you wade through the water in wonder. When you exit, you’ll witness the sight that gives this beautiful spot its name: A handful of 40-foot granite boulders form private pools as if that was what they were made for.
