ecclesiastical bodies. I do want political action by Christians. It isn’t the job o f the church to say what you should do. It is the job o f the church to change men and send them into society as Chris tian missionaries and into politics to help change the government. The longer I am in politics, the less confidence I have in the pronouncements by ecclesiastical bodies telling Congress what to do. Occasionally it seems to me that ministers would rather come down and testify or pass resolutions than they would to preach because it is more com forting. It gives them a sense o f greater impor tance.” The pastor can make his greatest contribution, then, by addressing himself to his members from the Word o f God with clarity and conviction. The members should be armed with Biblical principles to meet the rife issues o f poverty, race, labor unions, war, the draft. No area o f human need lies outside the realm o f human responsibility. The role o f the pastor then is to guide, direct, and inspire the laity so that they can in turn act in dividually as Christians and make their contribu tion to the community. What Is the Pastor’s Message? This kind o f ministry will demand o f the pas tor that he keep up with the times and be posted on current events. He must also be a master o f the content o f the Word o f God so that his testimony will have a clear Scriptural foundation. A concern merely for human welfare, however laudable that is, does not go far enough. Any message for the church from its spokesmen needs to make clear the foundation on which it builds its case. There is always the danger that the pastor will make the Lord say what he wants Him to say, instead o f being careful to say only what God wants His servant to say. The credibility o f the Word is al ways weakened when the Church extends it beyond its intended bounds. Pastoral opinions and expres sions should be Scripturally sound and intellectu ally honest. Shoddy scholarship and distortions o f data to prove predetermined positions ought not to be associated with Christ’s representatives. His case should shout: “ Thus saith the Lord.” This kind o f influence by the pastor in his community will have mighty effects. The New Testament Church, in no position to issue statements regard ing slavery, despotic government, immorality, dis honesty, etc., nevertheless proved itself to be a powerful forcé for social good and righteousness within the pagan empire. Surely, the American economy is not beyond the possibility o f such dv- namic effects. DO]

A Jewish boy accepted a tract, "Isaiah's Por trait of Messiah" and immediately asked. Can you tell me more about this?" There on a street corner in Chicago a 12 year old boy listened intently to the skillful presentation of the Scriptures and ac cepted Jesus Christ as his Messiah and Sav iour. A middle-aged Jew ess, after hearing the gospel for several years at Miami Beach called and said, "I am terribly distressed. Please come over. I must find the Lord today."
