the Holy Spirit can ever extri cate them. Unity and God Unity does not believe that God is a Person. Charles Fillmore stated bluntly: “ God is not lov ing . . . God does not love any body or anything. God is the love in everybody and everything. . . . We must relieve our mind o f these ideas o f a personal God ruling over us in an arbitrary manner” (Jesus Christ Heals, pp. 13, 23). Unity teaches as does Christian Science that God is an inexorable principle. “ He is principle, im personal . . . childlike, untrained minds say God is a personal be ing’^ '(Lessons in Truth, Cady, pp. 10 , 11 ) . “ Drop from your minds,” wrote Fillmore, “ the belief that God is in any way separated from you, that He occupies form or space outside o f you” (Jesus Christ Healing, pp. 27, 28). “ The Father within you . . . is not far away in a place called Heaven” ( Christian Healing, p. 8 ). Unity teaches that actually men are God: “We all have direct ac cess through the Father in us— the central T o f our being — to the great whole o f life, wisdom, power, which is God” (Lessons in Truth, Cady, p. 11). “ God is your highest self and is in constant waiting upon you. . . . Never be formal with God. . . . You cannot use God too often. . . . God is not a being or a person having life, intelligence, love, power. God is that invisible, intangible, but very real, something we call life” (Les sons in Truth , p. 6 ). Unity teaches an unqualified pantheism. “ God then is the sub stance or the real thing standing under every visible form o f life, love, intelligence or power. Each rock, tree, animal, everything visible, is a manifestation o f the one Spirit, God. . . . Each is God come forth in different quantity or degree (Lessons in Truth, pp. 8, 9 ). “ He who worships the gol den calf as his highest conception o f God, worships God” (Lessons in Truth, p. 126).

Unity and the Lord Jesuit Christ

Unity teaches that Jesus Christ was not real, but an allegory: “ Jesus Christ was Himself a par able and His life an allegory o f the experiences that man passes through in development from nat ural to spiritual consciousness” (Christian Healing, Fillmore, p. 68 ). Unity teaches that He evolved: “ The evolution o f Jesus was a combination o f mind and body un- foldment . . . the body o f Jesus was an unfoldment from sense to Spirit” (Teach Us to Pray, p. 66). Unity teaches that He went through many in c a r n a t i o n s , which took the forms o f Moses, Elisha, David and others: “ These were His days at school, and He arrived at a state o f conscious ness, while manifesting as Jesus o f Nazareth, where He remem bered His past lives” (Unity, Vol. 14, p. 149, 1901). Unity answers the question as to why Jesus came: “ He made the connection between our state o f consciousness and the more in tense one o f the Father. He united them — made them a unit — hence, the at-one-ment, or atone ment through Him” (Talks on Truth, p. 166). This play upon words originat ed with Mrs. Eddy, founder o f Christian Science and has no re lation to the meaning o f the word atonement which is according to Webster, “ satisfactory reparation for an offence or injury.” God’s Word teaches us that the Lord Jesus Christ made just such re paration on the cross: “ He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness o f God in Him” (II Cor. 5 :21 ). The cross o f Christ is made o f no effect by Unity. This is their blasphemous statement in regard to Calvary: “What died on the cross was the consciousness o f all mortal beliefs that hold us in bondage— such as sin, evil, flesh ly lusts — and death which He
