Washington Square News - TRIALS: diversifying law schools

6/15/09 7:48 AM

Although TRIALS is committed to accepting economically deficient students from underrepresented backgrounds, Alagappan states that students’ economic or racial background will not be a direct factor in admission. “Of course our primary goal is to advance racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity in these fields. However, we did not want to exclude certain students by imposing eligibility requirements in terms of household income, race or ethnic background,” he said. “A white woman, for example, may have a personal background or identification that is grossly underrepresented among lawyers. We did not want to tell such a woman that TRIALS was not for her without having had a chance to hear her story.”

In the years to come, TRIALS is expected to be seen as a popular way to obtain instruction for the LSAT as well as experience a law school-like environment.

“There were 4,600 applications for 20 spots, so I have a sense that this program is being very well received in the market,” Revesz said.
