C ardiogenic shock is a lethal condition in which reduced cardiac output causes inadequate oxygen supply to the body’s organs and tissues. It has several causes including heart attacks, worsening of pre-existing heart failure, acute heart failure such as myocarditis, first presentation of a cardiomyopathy, and overdoses of certain medications. The only recent study of patients with cardiogenic shock in the UK showed an in-hospital mortality of 55%, making it one of the most lethal conditions we treat in the ICU.
