PUBLISHER’S NOTE SARAH NATHAN

So what’s it got to do with this month’s issue? As you can see in our cover, the theme this month is “The Digital Issue”, and as it always is in the past, we try not to take one word’s definition literally. We broaden our senses to try to perceive the idea of travel providers are increasingly partnering with influencers and finding new ways to mobilize the public figures, tastemakers and lifestyle gurus to boost their brands. For this issue cover story, we talked and asked fashion bloggers, digital influencers, Indonesia’s finest designer and all around wonder Tities Sapoetra - about this profession of the modern age – as well as some of the personal stories about him (page 37) . We’ve also compiled a Special Section consisting of ten irresistible reasons to visit Bali, and the guide to style your stay in this magnificent island of god. Check out the neighbourhood section, where we talk about the heavenly wilderness hideaway of Amanwana (page 69) . Situated on a secluded cove at Moyo Island, East Bali, Amanwana is a natural paradise where one can expect to embrace an exclusive hideaway with their beloved; far from their bustling, crowded vibe of daily routine. Also don’t miss some of our takes on the exclusive interview under our elsewhere section - with one of the admirable digital content creator and a travel TV Host from Bali, Inka Fitria shares her experience adventuring Saumlaki, Maluku Islands (page 78). Bottom line, it’s the issue you want to read and share on your social media handles. As always, I hope you enjoy the issue and please do feel free to get in touch with me personally. Thank you and happy reading!

EDITOR’S PICK EXPERIENCE 21

Let’s Grab a Coffee-and-Dine: FIKA Bali 4 ‘Fancy a Fika?’ is a term that would be familiar for Sweden people. ‘Fika’ is a term to express grabbing a coffee with someone; family, friend or lovers alike, and that’s the main philosophy that revolves around FIKA Bali. This urban-styled chic café on the street of Batu Bolong serves simple, tasty food accompanied by great coffee. Expect to find some Swedish influence at the restaurant’s extensive menu; such as Salmon Bagel for breakfast or the iconic Swedish Meatballs for dinner. Yum!

Luxury Canggu Getaway: The River House 5 As part of exquisite villa collections which spans on Canggu and Pererenan area, The River House is Bali life, lavishly re-imagined. Bold and confident, this oasis of luxury surrounded by lush paddy fields is ready to be your home away from home. Each of the villa’s sizeable bedrooms is large enough to escape and unwind with friends and family; briefly away from the bustling of Canggu’s vibrant party ambience. Sunset is viewed through coconut trees and sunrise will greet you each morning accompanied by the trickling sound of running water and wild birds playing by the river. A blissful tropical haven for your memorable holiday!

Seminyak Nightlife Resurgence: SHISHI Bali 6 The latest addition of Seminyak nightlife scene, SHISHI Asian Bistro and Nightclub is ready to brighten up the after-sunset atmosphere of Bali’s popular district with its fresh approach. The three-storey powerhouse of Asian dining, lounging and clubbing just opened their door for public on November 22nd 2019, and now slowly becoming a renowned destination for club-hoppers and party-goers alike to dance all-night long. TASTE EXPERIENCE 25

To say that Tanaman draws its inspiration from the native plants of Indonesia would be an understatement, as the whole restaurant’s philosophy revolves around this very aspect (‘Tanaman’ literally means ‘plants’ in Indonesia)

Left page: ambience of Tanaman; Right page: top - lotek salad Center pagr: Rendang Nangka Bottom right page: island spritz

Established inside the brand new OMA- designed Potato Head Studios, Tanaman offers a bold dining experience for their guest. Located on the ground floor of the Desa's new Potato Head Studios, the dome-shaped space draws guests into a futuristic environment of reflective floors and neon lighting, while a large central bar and open kitchen adds to the ambience. To say that Tanaman draws its inspiration from the native plants of Indonesia would be an understatement, as the restaurant’s main philosophy revolves around this very aspect (‘Tanaman’ literally means ‘plants’ in Indonesia). The produce used in all of the dishes is sourced directly from a handful of small, spray-free farms in Bali’s interior and the chefs have drawn on their fondest childhood memories to create a menu that reflects Indonesia’s ancient culture, which is heavily connected to Mother Earth herself. Created by talented local Executive Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa and his merry team of professional cook, some of Tanaman's most standout dishes including ‘Bajagor’ (Bakso Jamur Goreng or Fried Meatball Mushroom) coined by the team as a botanical take on Batagor (a traditional West Javanese fried dumpling dish, usually made with mackerel). These crispy dumplings are made with field mushrooms and served with a peanut and sweet soy sauce. For the main menu, Rendang Nangka is a must try, which sees young jackfruit caramelized and braised in coconut milk for 16 hours. The fibrous nature of the jackfruit reaches a tender, melt-in-your-mouth consistency, surprisingly

similar to pulled beef used in the original spicy and flavorful West Sumatran dry curry; a brilliant twist to one of Indonesia's most renowned staple food. To wrap the whole pleasant dining experience, try one of Tanaman's delightful desserts; such as Bubur Sumsum, a fine rendition of Indonesia's traditional sweet treat which consist a creamy porridge covered in coconut sorbet with coconut nectar drizzled on top. COVER STORY INSPIRATION 39

We absolutely love your designs! But how did it started? What/who inspires you to be a fashion designer? My MOM! She is a pattern maker from Surabaya, and her fashion blood flows through me. She has inadvertently introduced the vibrant atmosphere of workshop and fashion runway to me since I was little. You are also known as a prominent influencer! Could you elaborate more about your social media persona? What did you want to convey to the views through @titiessapoetra? To be honest, my career as an influencer came accidentally. It all started because I was on entertainment industry (as TV personality), which makes it easier for me to influence my surrounding through social media. Even before the digital era, I was often asked to be an advisor for the people around me, and just to be sincere, what you see on my social media is not my entire life! Maybe it’s only about 30%, as what you see there now is mostly commercial things; like work, achievement, stage and also some poetry that I made What’s the most common mistake that new social media influencers do; could you give some practical tips for those who wish to start (as an influencer)? Being prideful for numbers that has zero worth compared to the real life, and sometime to achieve the said numbers (i.e Instagram Likes), they put aside all norms and manners. That’s what I’ve personally seen happening often. Some tips from me for new influencer: (1) be honest with what you want to post, and not only just for content. Post something that you are really going through in daily life. (2) Innovate; don’t be afraid to collaborate with fellow influencers and do real things; and not just ‘pretty shot’ on gorgeous places. Lastly, (3) remember that social media platform is owned by someone. It can be disappeared anytime, so remember to have the real quality of yourself; not just defined by your feed / social media gallery! Where’s the last place that you travel to; any interesting stories that you could share to our readers? Just recently I’m going to Japan for the first time in my life, and it was truly love at the first sight! But there’s one place that I always miss and easy to visit: Bali. In a year, I regularly visit this island on 5 occasions!

Tell us about your signature brand aesthetic; where do you usually draws inspiration for your design collections? My monogram signature, ‘Labyrinth’, really changed my life in this industry. To be able to find my very own fashion brand DNA was the best gift I’ve ever had. My idea usually comes when I was travelling on my holiday, if I didn’t forget to write or draw it down on my notes (laugh) According to your self-experience, what is the best way for entrepreneurs to build their brands through digital platform? What’s the biggest challenge you’ve overcome so far in that aspect? Networking and innovation are two of the most important things, because in the end, profit is the goal of every business effort. My biggest challenge so far is facing the human resources who didn’t have the fighting spirit, they give up too easily!

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? Obviously, so huge! Because nowadays, owning an Instagram account is equivalent with owning physical boutique or store. So, it didn’t surprise me that now many local fashion brands are growing fast, because they too, didn’t want to miss the convenience of running their business in this digital era Describe yourself in three colors • Black: The symbol of boldness and power • White: The color that represent ‘good side’ from a thinking • Pink: The sweet side which comforts everyone and makes those who we want to be close with keeps coming back!
