FIGURE 3-8: NOAA DEPTH CHART [23]

Depth of the water at the shoreline must be confirmed from the local USCG, who may have knowledge from being stationed in the area or a contractor, who will take soundings at the site:  The depth in 2017 NOAA charts is listed as being 26 ft. over the crib (which anchors the log booms or support other structures) and at the shoreline, it appears to be 1 to 2 ft. [23] .  Depth at the shore from Bay Shore is 30 ft. (north of BRP) and North Point is 90 ft. (south of BRP) [23] . A barge operation would encompass the following operational scenario:  The barge would be grounded on the shore at the site if there are no obstructions to reaching it. Based on the information found in the 2017 NOAA charts, barriers appear along the shoreline. The ground and shore conditions must be evaluated to determine how close a barge can get to a shore. As mentioned above, depth of the water at the shoreline must also be confirmed. This process will involve the tugboat and spud barge with a crane on it to hold a transport barge in place during loading.  Once the barge is grounded, a temporary ramp will be installed and a goldhofer would drive from the ISFSI on-site transfer point onto the barge, place the unit on pre-staged stands and beams, lower the cask and skid onto the beams, lower itself and retreat from the barge back onto the land. The number of casks that can be loaded onto a barge at one time will be determined by the following factors:  The size of the barge (length x width).  Depth of the water at the time of shipment.  Whether units will be roll on/roll off or lifted with a crane; more room is required for stands and beams between units if it is roll on/roll off operation.  Availability of assets at the time of shipment.
