What happened to winter?

DIANE HUNTER diane.hunter@eap.on.ca

(OPP) are warning about ice conditions on some lakes and rivers in the area and are asking the public to use caution when venturing out on the ice. Not every lake or river is the same and varying winter weather conditions and temperatures can rapidly change ice conditions. Ice safety and weight-bearing properties of ice can be affected bymany factors, including thickness, currents, age of ice, pressure cracks and snow cover. Ice does not freeze at uniform thickness across bodies of water. Thickness should be checked regularly further out onto the ice. The strongest ice is clear blue in color. White or opaque ice is much weaker. A layer of heavy snow on a frozen lake or river can insulate the ice below and slow down freezing. Travelling on ice with snowmobiles or vehicles can be potentially very dangerous and added precautions must be taken. Slushy ice, untracked ice, or ice near moving water or dock bubblers should be avoided. The OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) are reminding snowmobilers to take personal responsibility for their own safety and well-being this winter. Snowmobilers are advised to go online at www. ofsc.on.ca to check the status of local trails. If planning to head out onto the ice or trails, it’s a good idea to let someone know the destination and planned time of return, so if there is a problem rescue teams will know where to look.

This year the season seems to be the winter that never came, which is a delight to some, but not somuch for those who enjoy and rely on the cold weather. Extremely mild weather has left people wondering what happened to winter. For some, it’s a welcomed change, but for others, it just not good for business. “The season has been awful,” said Andre Lalonde, former president of the Eastern Ontario Snowmobile Club, and Clarence Rockland city councillor. “The guys who do the groomwork on the trails do a fantastic job for what they have to work with. I was out last week, and the trails were pretty good for the amount of snow we had.” Lalonde said in order for the remainder of the season to be fairly decent we need snow and cold. “We need a winter,” he summed up. El Niño, a global climate phenomenon caused by high sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific is part of the reason for the warmer temperatures, and according to weather experts, it is not showing signs of letting up any time soon. On top of not being able to do a lot of winter activities, there are dangers involved in the lack of snow and ice. Some people are still going out onto the ice to fish, or to walk despite warnings.
