Mama wasn’t very anxious to call ■**us for supper. When we sat down, all five of us, we faced a great bowl of boiled potatoes. Noth­ ing else. We looked questioningly at Mama. Her eyes were evasive with an intangible apology. Papa bowed his head. “ Let us ask God to bless our food,” he said. “Dear Lord, please help us to do Thy will, and please bless. . . There was a long pause and I slanted my eyes upward without moving my head. His head was buried in both hands. “ . . . the potatoes,” he finished. A potato is good, swimming in gravy and flanked by com on the cob and steak, or even a small ham­ burger. But an isolated potato is very dry and very lonesome. The usual hubbub of our voices was lacking as we reluctantly ate. Su d d e n l y P a p a ’ s g r a y eyes twinkled; the waves in his red- gold hair caught the light of the lamp in the center of the table. “We have lots more than potatoes,” he said, “we have love.” He looked at me and then all around the table at Lily and Arthur and Gordon and very small George. There was tenderness in his eyes and a pathos which he tried to hide. “ I have five wonderful children,” he said. “ I am rich.” Mama was watching his face. Slowly a look of relief eased the
