Newton's Tree The American National Weight and Measures Office at Washington, D.C., has planted in its backyard an apple tree that is the direct de scendant of the one that dropped an apple on Isaac Newton’s head in 1666 and spurred him to the dis covery of the law of gravity. The tree is the result of a graft taken from one at the British Physi cal Science Laboratory, itself graft ed from the tree that used to grow in Newton’s garden. No Pilots Needed A research team at the Massa chusetts Institute of Technology has developed “ a little black box” that can guide aircraft to any point on the globe without the help of a human pilot or any kind of outside radio or radar control. This device is so accurate that it guided a United States A ir Force B-29 from Bedford, Mass., to Los Angeles, Calif, in 1953, with an error of only 10 miles at the final destina tion. After that test flight the pilot remarked to the M lT engineers, “ You can celebrate but I’ve just lost m y job.” This device has been improved to the point where it is ready for increasingly widespread operation al use in aircraft and in the fast developing long-range guided mis siles. Once the device is sent on its way, it needs no external control or references such as star sightings or radar “ fixes” and therefore cannot be jammed by an enemy. It will guide aircraft straight to its desti nation or a missile to its target. Describing this work, Professor Draper of M IT remarked that there is “ nothing at all magical about it. It is a simple application of Newton’s laws of motion.”
Rise of Strontium in Milk Reported An Atomic Energy Commission official says the level of radioactive strontium in milk and bones is slowly but steadily increasing, al though it is still far below the dan ger level. John H. Harley, chief of the analytical branch of the AEC’s health and safety laboratory in New York, also told the Industrial Medical Conference recently that the general world-wide average of bone deposit of strontium-90 is now about one-thousandth of what is considered permissible without po tential hazard for the entire popu lation. Bible Translation from Aramaic Planned A new translation of the Bible from the Aramaic dialect, the lan guage spoken by Christ, will appear soon according to the A. J. Holman Co., publisher. George M. Lamsa, scriptural scholar and author, has translated the work entitled The H oly Bible from Ancient Eastern Manuscripts, and subtitled Being a translation from the Peshitta, the authorized Bible of the Church of the East. Lamsa, according to Hol man Co., has been engaged in Ara maic and biblical research for the past 30 years, the last 18 of these studying and translating the Pe shitta. New Jewish Family Bible A new illustrated Jewish Family Bible, described as the most com plete edition of the Holy Scriptures ever assembled for Jews, was intro duced to a gathering of scholars and religious leaders recently in New York. The new Bible published by the Menorah Press of Chicago was pre pared and compiled by a large group of schol ars , translators, editors, map-makers, artists and technicians and took four years to complete. In addition to the full text of the Old Testament and several new fea tures, the Bible contains many pages of original art in full-color reproduction. Among the “ firsts”
