Study of Alcoholism Two sessions of the Institute of Scientific Studies for the Prevention of Alcoholism were held recently at the American University in Wash ington, D.C. and Loma Linda, Calif. These institutes are conducted by the National Committee for the Pre vention of Alcoholism. More than 700 school administrators, teachers, physicians, clergymen, social work ers and professional temperance workers from all over the United States and Canada, as well as repre sentat i ves f r om Europe, South America, Asia and Africa, have at tended the institutes since the first one was held in 1950. According to the reports coming from these institutes, alcoholism has become a major health prob lem, 155 times more prevalent than polio, 11 times more prevalent than tuberculosis, and six times more prevalent than cancer. The trend in modem medicine is toward pre vention rather than merely curative procedures, and the institutes seek to give responsible persons the scientific facts and information that will qualify them to work more ef fectively in behalf of national so briety. Information may be o b ta i ned from the National Committee for the Prevention of Alcoholism, 6840 Eastern Ave., N.W., Washington 12, D.C. Strengthening of Family Life Strengthening family life and overcoming juvenile delinquency were No. 1 on a list of social needs which a national conference of so cial workers declared should receive p r im a r y at tent i on f r om the churches in America. The needs were part of a report unanimously adopted by some 400 delegates to the National Confer ence of Policy Strategy on Social Welfare which met recently in At lantic City, N.J. The report called on the churches to pioneer in new and important services for human welfare and to seek to assist in the creation of the “ best possible type of society.” The Conference recognized that primary social needs vary from community to community but as serted that “ certain needs seem to have priority however in the de mands they make upon the heart of the churches today.” END-
