BOOK REVIEWS continued it has been of late. The modem and more or less literal translations can not recover the full meaning of the Greek as the free translation is able to do (Phillips, Way, etc.). In an ex panded rendering the translator is free to use as many words as he needs to get at the real meaning in English idiom. Based solidly on the doctrine of full inspiration, Wuest proceeds to devel op his translation with conviction that he is presenting more of the real Word of God than anyone can get without a knowledge of Greek. Even so there will always be a certain awkward ness in translating, especially when one tries to bring out devices in one language which do not exist in an other, such as the distinction between the present and aorist imperative in the Greek which are not inherent in our English system without using a phrase; also the imperfect and the aorist as past tense. Thus one will find right away in John’s Gospel this distinction in Wuest’s rendering: “ In the beginning the Word was existing.” The force of the word with is exhibited also by his “was in fellowship with God the Father” in John 1:2. There will doubtless be some flaws found in the work. Where two alternatives are possible scholars will not always agree as to which is right. The reader is bound to find this a stimulating ex perience to say the least. 320 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids; $3.50. If you use this leadership training manual, Sunday school teaching can be fun. In the chapters devoted to the preparation of the teacher, the author challenges the teacher in his relation to God and man through growth in personality and wisdom, as well as in evangelistic and teaching purposes. He lays stress upon knowledge of the pupils, the Word of God, the learning process and classroom needs. The au thor stresses the importance of the teacher’s efforts and minimizes the appropriation of God’s grace in the believer’s life. It is a teacher’s guide rather than an inspirational volume. The two sections on teaching and evaluation of the lesson are splendid in their helpful simplicity. The pro cess is outlined step by step from con sideration of aims, plan, teaching methods and pupil participation. Ways of evaluating what the teacher has taught and the pupil has learned are many. The clearly readable text is illustrated in the margins with col- Teaching W ith Success By Guy P a Leavitf

MORE WEDGES The missionary zeal of our workers is opening many doors for witnessing to Jews concern ing their Messiah Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is one thing to open these doors; it is another thing to keep them open. For this more full-time workers are needed to minister in the new fields. The gifts of the Lord’s people are the wedges that will keep these doors from closing.
