King's Business - 1957-11

Donner Party’s ill-fated trek through the High Sierras. Mrs. Bowlen, a pastor’s wife, was converted in Cali fornia and has a background of news paper experience. The natural turn ing to the Lord exhibited in the story should be an encouragement to all young Christians and a challenge to unbelievers. 352 pages; cloth; Moody Press, Chicago, 111.; $3.00. Here is a reissue of Maclaren’s ex position of John 14-16 which was orig inally published in London in 1890 under the title, Holy of Holies. One always questions the change of title in a reprint but this probably de scribes more accurately the contents than the former title. This is a rich section of Scripture and one that de serves preaching with power. This book will help to point up the spir itual message of Jesus in this crucial hour. 379 pages; cloth; Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Mich.; $2.95. If you have been looking for a book that will satisfy the need for brief oral reading sessions in a family group, or for a book that will give your young people a taste of exciting adventure with tremendous moral background, you will find your an swer in the new Pilot $eries in Liter ature, compiled by Alice Fenanga, Gertrude Haan and Beth Merizon. Today the trend in literature is definitely away from the traditional moral character building series, and too often we find our children select ing books that are not compatible with the Christian fundamental phi losophies. We also find our Christian schools unable to find a literature series that will satisfy the hunger of our exceptional students for addition al reading material on the junior high level. It is for this reason that the Pilot Series was published. The book is organized into 11 emits covering subject matter as fol lows: Tales of Courage, Other Lands, Fun and Laughter, Builders of Amer ica, Among the Animals, Famous Peo ple, Learning to Live Together, Dis covering Nature’s Stecrets, Adventure Stories, Christmas, and Myths, Leg ends, and Tales of Fancy. Classic excerpts, folk tales, and current Amer ican authors are featured in this series. Book One of the Pilot Series should be number one on your list for cur riculum reading. 516 pages; cloth; Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., Grand Rapids; $4.95 — Reviewed by Gloria Graham. END.
