For people on the outside, the recycling business might seem like a complicated one. But for nearly 40 years, Kline Paper has been working to simplify the process for its clients.
Kline Paper was founded in 1976. According to Leon Kline, the company’s CEO, his uncles created the company after having previously worked for their father’s firm. “My grandfather’s com- pany was bought out,” Kline explained. “When that was sold, they worked with the new company for a while, and they even- tually left and formed Kline Paper. A lot of their customers went with them.” Customers have trusted Kline Paper for almost four decades, and Kline said that is due in large part to the company’s long- standing dedication to personalized customer service. During the industrial recycling process, waste paper is hand-sorted inside the Kline Paper facility, where the paper is organized by grade and baled accordingly. The paper is then sent to various paper mills to be made into new products. Kline Paper has been a tenant of St. John Properties from its beginning in 1976, and recently renewed its lease for 10 more years. “We have a good relationship with St. John,” Kline said. “They’ve helped us expand over the years.” These expansions have included installing skylights to facilitate Kline Paper’s indoor paper-sorting operations, as well as balers, scales and loading docks in the company’s 50,000-square-foot facility, located in the Columbia Center. “My family and St. John have worked together to ensure our building here has what is needed to be able to do what we do,” Kline said. When asked what he might tell prospective St. John Properties tenants, Kline didn’t hesitate. “I’d tell them who to call: Bob Becker, a senior vice president [at St. John Properties]. My uncles have dealt with him for a long time. I’d let them know that they’ve been fair with us.” “We sort more than 300,000 pounds of paper per day — more than 75 million pounds per year,” Kline said.
