JOE HARGAN PAI PPAI

Born in 1952 in Glasgow, Joe Hargan studied Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art from 1970 – 74. A well recognised and respected figure on the Scottish art scene, Joe was President and Chairman of the Paisley Art Institute from 1989 - 2000 and President of the Glasgow Art Club until 2020. A master of colour and tongue in cheek humour, Joe’s paintings offer humorous and sometimes surreal vignettes of the good life, featuring Sniffy and various other characters within striking gallery and stately home settings. Recurring symbols and metaphors abound within the paintings, and one is often treated to a painting within a painting, an old master within a new master.

RAQUEL ALVAREZ SARDINA

Raquel Alvarez Sardina was born in Barcelona. At the age of seventeen she joined Academia Leonardo da Vinci and in 1986 she started a degree in Fine Arts. Whilst doing the degree she attended academia Sant Vicenç and Boter/ Santalo and completed a drawing course at ‘Academia Lorenzo de Medici’ in Florence. After graduating in 1991 she came to England where she studied a Masters Degree at Cardiff University. Drawing influence from the Master painters of the Spanish Tenebrism of the Baroque period she has developed a personal contemporary style to represent beauty. Her painting method is slow, precise and full of feeling. It is as though she wants us to slow down and contemplate a few simple objects in silence. She spends a considerable amount of time setting the composition; each fruit or object is placed carefully in the space. Sketching is useful to decide, sometimes by a matter of millimetres where every fruit or leave should be. When she is happy with the composition she draws directly onto the canvas with a brush.

NAEL HANNA

Born in Neneveh, Northern Iraq, Nael Hanna studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee after gaining a scholarship to study abroad. It was here that he fell in love with the Scottish landscape and coastline and in particular the drama of the changing weather. Nael has won a number of awards and is exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally. Nael’s passion for painting is unmistakable; his works are a visceral and immediate response to his subjects, with each painting developing an emotional charge and a rhythm of its own. He prefers to paint outdoors, setting up easel in the fields outside his Angus home and responding to the different colours each season brings. If there’s a wildness to Nael’s work it’s because he’s painting the very sensation of being outside; nature’s momentum sees him being lashed by the wind one moment only to stop and watch the sun break through clouds the next.

He has had many solo shows, both in the UK and abroad, and has won many prestigious and major awards. Simon’s paintings are characterised by references to Scottish life and society, incorporating fish, boats, religious symbols and everyday items. These objects are arranged upon a rich textural ground created by the application of multiple layers of acrylic paint. He has worked with acrylic paint for almost 30 years, developing his own individual style and fundamental visual language.

She returned to ECA as a lecturer while also travelling and honing her style before focusing fully on her Fine Art career. She continues to live and work in Scotland. The work of Scottish and French masters such as McTaggart and Monet were early influences in Ann’s artistic development with her broad tastes ranging beyond this to modern painters such as Zao Wui Ki and Peter Doig. Travel has also continued to inform Ann’s work for a number of years, having seen the changing of seasons across multiple landscapes in the UK and mainland Europe, an intuitive approach to colour and light continues to be an evocative, guiding force in Ann’s work.

STEPHEN MANGAN

Born in Edinburgh, Stephen Mangan studied at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College, Dundee and in the years since completing his studies he has established himself as one of the most distinctive figurative artists in Scottish contemporary painting. Inspired by atmospheric locations and the individuals that inhabit them, Stephen’s work seems to exist in another time and place. Best known for his scenes of race courses, beaches, fairgrounds and theatres, his work casts a unique light on these bustling locales, often highlighting individuals caught in moments of contemplation, introspection and even melancholy.

FRANCIS BOAG

Francis was born in Dundee and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the late sixties where his tutors included Alberto Morrocco and David McClure. He went on to balance a successful teaching career with his artistic practice before becoming a full time artist in 2001. Since then, Francis has worked steadily to establish himself as one of the leading figures in a new generation of Scottish Colourists.

Francis takes a great deal of inspiration from the landscape near his home in Stonehaven. From windswept harbours to patchwork fields, each of his pieces are carefully considered and imbued with an inviting atmosphere, encouraging the viewer to explore every inch of the canvas. Francis prefers to work intuitively without any pre-conceived idea or a specific composition in mind. He works in thin layers of acrylic paint which are built up to create layers of vivid colour, with collaged elements adding texture and an unpredictable quality to his surfaces.

GEORGE BIRRELL

A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, George Birrell has enjoyed a long career in teaching and now paints full time from his studio in East Lothian. When he was 15 George visited the villages of the East Neuk of Fife and he’s been fascinated by them ever since. These are villages with such a unique character, and one that contrasts strongly with some of the more dramatic and wild subjects of Scottish landscape paintings. George’s paintings are never of specific villages but they pull together the many elements - the architecture, alleyways, harbours and fishing creels - that are quintessentially East Neuk.

Andrew paints a wide range of still life subjects and this latest collection of paintings features his flower and fruit studies, along with a number of exquisitely painted Chinese ceramics and silverware.

GORDON WILSON

Born and raised in Glasgow, Gordon studied at Glasgow School of Art and gained experience in the arts industry as a designer and picture framer before moving into painting full time. Gordon’s subject matter ranges from quirky portraiture to emotive land and seascapes, and his deep love of the West Coast shines through in the majority of his work. Considering himself to be someone who draws from his own emotional responses, his expressive work combines the ever changing moods of the landscape with those of the artist himself. Working in oils, Gordon’s deft brushwork is a wonder to behold, with a deceptively simple stroke adding three dimensionality to his bold floral compositions or accentuating the proud expression of an old lady perched at the prow of a boat. This combination of well honed technical precision with a distinctly expressive element and a considerable dose of wry wit has given Gordon a wide and dedicated following.
