APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR AWARD Stepping up as a team player Working in accounting within a logistics company, Apprentice of the Year 2024 Finalist Iwan Williams had no particular focus on freight initially – but that has changed over his time with United Worldwide Logistics (UWL)

“Logistics is a great industry. All the planning that goes into it is extraordinary, and I want to learn more,” said Iwan Williams. Already, Iwan has made substantial contributions to UWL. He created a supplier database to track key details like payment terms and discrepancies. This “allows managers to see everything in depth, at a glance”, Iwan outlined. “It enables us to optimise payment schedules and improve supplier relationships.” The highlight of his career so far? “Well, now, it’s being a finalist in the BIFA Apprentice of the Year Award! Our company also won the Extra Mile Award so

it’s been amazing. Career-wise, doing

management accounts every month is a big role for someone my age; I prepare preliminary reports and summaries that my senior accountant can review and finalise.” Iwan also enjoys helping to develop others. When a new member joined the team, he created a detailed training manual and spent additional time each day ensuring they understood UWL’s

systems and processes. “This not only helped my new colleague to become more productive faster, but also strengthened our team’s overall performance. And our team doesn’t end with the department; it’s about the whole company,” he added. Iwan’s goal is to complete his AAT Level 4 apprenticeship and then move on to his ACCA qualifications.
