Policy & Compliance

BIFA has been contacted by the Department for Transport about road transport security and is pleased to reproduce its article here Keeping your fl eet secure

T he Department for Transport (DfT) has launched the Road Transport Security Standards. The road network is used by hostile actors to conduct their activity, both in the planning and execution of their activities. These include organised crime groups and terrorists who utilise vehicles to conduct attacks on crowded places, including recently in Magdeburg, Munich and New Orleans. In response, DfT designed the Road Transport Security Standards (RTSS) to support the commercial freight, bus and coach sector to better protect its vehicles, assets and personnel from theft, sabotage, hijacking or being targeted for terrorist purposes. These voluntary standards encompass a practical toolkit, a self-assessment form and best

practice links and guidance designed to support transport operators, logistics providers and security managers to better protect their vehicles. The standards have been developed to enable companies to comprehensively assess their existing security culture and practice. The standards follow the operated vehicles: how to prevent commercial vehicles being used for terrorism and other forms of serious and organised crime . The RTSS is not exhaustive and principles outlined in PAS 29000:2021 – commercially

provides an effective benchmark for companies on security practices. The RTSS will also be a useful entry point for operators and security managers who are developing their security culture against the threat of terrorism and organised crime groups. Participants who complete the RTSS self-assessment survey within the practical toolkit will be given feedback from the Road Transport Security Team identifying areas for potential improvement. Should you have any questions, please email roadtransportsecurity@dft.gov.uk.
