Most people associate the typical sorority experience with large, elaborate, multi-level houses sprinkled evenly down a Greek row on an idyllic college campus. You know, what’s depicted in movies, television shows or on Sports Center. However, there’s a vastly unexplored world of the Greek experience where many collegians thrive on campuses across the country, Alpha Phis included.
accommodate up to 250 members. With an elevator accessible to all three levels, members can easily access various study areas that vary from small private rooms to larger rooms with comfortable seating and a TV or Smartboard to share videos or assist with presentations. One area with cubicles can accommodate those who need power outlets and computer space, and another large multipurpose room with tables is ideal for architectural or design students who need to spread their materials out on a flat surace. The room also accomodates the space needed to create a large model or display and prepare large posters or banners. Prominent features include a grand front entrance adorned with a pair of artisan wrought iron doors featuring Alpha Phi’s letters. Upon entering the lodge through these magnificent doors, collegians, alumnae members and guests are presented with a grand split staircase that leads to multiple sitting areas furnished with comfortable chairs, sofas, a large
TV and fireplace. Additional features include gathering areas, eating space, a spacious kitchen, a large meeting or multipurpose room and ancillary spaces. The interior contains muted grays and cream accents, allowing Alpha Phi’s colors to shine on top of rich wood tones. This palette creates a warm, inviting space that current and future generations of Gamma Iota’s Alpha Phi sisters get to call their home away from home. Like many chapters who embrace the unhoused experience, not having the members “live-in” doesn’t stop the fun. The girls still meet up at the lodge to study together; hold watch parties for their favorite movies and TV shows; host major Fraternity events like recruitment, Bid Day and chapter meetings; family events like parents' weekends; and receptions before sporting events like homecoming.
I’m talking, of course, about the unhoused chapter experience.
Many of Alpha Phi’s collegiate chapters enjoy this unique “living-out” experience, but today we are highlighting Gamma Iota-Texas Tech and its lodge. The lodge at Texas Tech is truly a unique experience. And for college campuses that do not offer live-in houses, a facility like this is a must for Greek students.
