Long-Term Illness Card If you have a medical condition covered by the Long-Term Illness Scheme, you can get free drugs, medicines, and medical and surgical appliances for the treatment of that condition. The Long-Term Illness Scheme does not depend on your income or other circumstances. You may also be eligible for a Medical card or GP visit card, depending on your circumstances. Drugs Payment Scheme Under the Drugs Payment Scheme, you and your family only have to pay a maximum of €80 each month for approved prescribed drugs and medicines, and certain appliances. This includes incontinence wear. Treatment Benefit Scheme Treatment Benefit is a scheme run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) to provide a limited financial contribution towards dental, optical and aural services. The Treatment Benefit Scheme is available to retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions. Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may qualify for: • Dental benefit (free dental exam every year) • Optical benefit (free eyesight test, once every 2 years). • Hearing aids (up to €500 per hearing aid or €1000 for both every 4 years) • Hair piece or wig (hair loss from disease or treatment of disease)
