is clearly stated in I John 5:11-13, which are key verses to the study of this epistle. Here we are told that God not only has given us eternal life, but also that this life is in His Son. Epp declares: “Eternal life is a special kind of life. It is a quality of life which makes it possible for us to fellowship with God. More than duration of life is meant. The un saved have eternal existence, but no where does the Bible describe that as eternal life. Existence apart from God, even though men are able to think, speak, feel and remember, is not life but death. Christ Jesus is the source of eternal life. Indeed, He is the believer’s eternal life, and His character is the character of that life. This will become more evident as the teaching of this epistle opens up to us.”
The next two words, LIGHT and LOVE, provide the test whereby we may know whether or not that life is within us. We are told that God as to His nature is light and there is no darkness in Him. And if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with the other. Light reveals righteousness and it also reveals sin. By virtue of the light then we can know whether we have eternal life or not. Love is the next word. This is a God-given love and becomes both the outward expression of the inward life, and another test whereby we may know that we have such life. The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 5 :5), so that the man who is born of God is a man who loves his brethren and all men. This is the very essence of Christianity.
