Close up, I witnessed jeal- ousy on multiple fronts. Siswi, the diva at Camp Leakey who dislikes females—both human and orangutan—stood eye-to-eye, nose-to-nose to me. She appeared to decide I was no threat to her greater beauty. • Toddler curiosity. I saw toddler orangutans behave like human toddlers—grabbing my umbrella, opening it, turning it inside out, and tossing it from one to another. Such closeness with wildlife is no longer allowed with all we know DERXW]RRQRWLFGLVHDVHVDQGSDQGHPLFV+RZHYHU,OHDUQHGVRPXFK then about other species and how much I value them, nature, and the earth. I also saw the dark side of how humans treat the natural envi- ronment and animals as disposable. (Clear cutting critical rainforest
