DR. MARSHALL’S GOT TALENT IS LIVE! HAVE YOU UPLOADED YOUR AUDITION VIDEO YET?

If you haven’t already heard, my team and I have cooked up a truly fun, knock- your-socks-off contest to kick off 2020: Dr. Marshall’s Got Talent. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like, but instead of accepting a range of talents, we’re inviting patients like you to show off their lip sync skills for the chance to win a pair of Powerbeats Pro by Dre wireless headphones .

1. Choose your song. We’re offering three upbeat jams for you to pick from: “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and “I Want It That Way” by The Backstreet Boys. 2. Film your video. We’d love to see you have fun with your lip syncing! Get creative with your outfit, dance moves, and facial expressions to increase your chance of winning.

The idea came out of a discussion in the office about how to start the new year off

humor. If you haven’t uploaded your entry yet, don’t worry — there’s still time. We’re taking auditions via social media through Tuesday, March 31. Make sure you get your entry in before then so you have a shot at those headphones. My team and I will choose a winner on Wednesday, April 1, and post their name on social media so you’ll know right away if you dusted the competition. If you’re having problems finding us on social media or have questions about how to enter Dr. Marshall’s Got Talent, don’t hesitate to call our office at 864-336-2965. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

on a positive foot, and someone on staff tossed out the concept of hosting a lip sync battle. Of course, I loved the idea immediately, and we got started right away! Entries started coming in as of January, and we’ve loved seeing all of your creative “audition” tapes — every single one so far has made me smile. If you’d love to listen to you favorite tunes in style this year with those Powerbeats Pro by Dre headphones, you can enter Dr. Marshall’s Got Talent by following these four easy steps:

SCIENCE WANTS YOU TO STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES THE BENEFITS OF SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE

In a 2008 survey conducted by the National Trust in Britain, children were more likely to correctly identify a Dalek from “Doctor Who” than a barn owl. Likewise, a 2010 Kaiser Family Foundation study of 8–18-year-olds in the U.S. found that the average youth spends more than 53 hours a week engaged with entertainment media. These statistics, coupled with growing concerns that children are spending less time outdoors, are leading to terms like “nature deficit disorder” and global initiatives to get kids outside. Why is contact with the outdoors so important? Researchers are answering this question by studying the benefits of time spent in nature. One benefit is that outdoor time helps kids understand boundaries and learn how to assess risk. As naturalist, author,

and broadcaster Stephen Moss puts it, “Falling out of a tree is a very good lesson in risk- reward.” Not to mention, time in nature may help improve focus for hyperactive kids. In one national study of youths by the University of Illinois, participants’ attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms were reduced after spending time in a green setting versus a more urban one. This may be due to the fact that natural environments call upon our “soft fascination,” a less exhausting type of focus than what is required by urban environments. Emotional benefits were discovered too, including reduced aggression, increased happiness, and improved self-esteem. Beyond just getting outside, the type of contact we have with nature also matters. Visits to nature centers and watching “Planet Earth”

are two ways to experience the outdoors. But research points specifically to the importance of free play in the natural world: unstructured outdoor time when children can explore and engage with their natural surroundings with no curriculum, lesson, or activity to complete. Ever notice how kids are fascinated by the simplest things? A child visits a rose garden, but before they even get to the flowers, they become captivated by a leaf on the ground or an ant crawling on their shoe. Children are born naturalists. These are the moments we need to recapture. Take a page out of that kid’s book, and as the saying goes, stop and smell the roses — or leaves or ants — with no checklist and no plan, just time spent playing outside.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: KAYLA MEET THE NEWEST MOM IN OUR OFFICE!

After months of maternity leave, our orthodontic assistant Kayla has returned to the office! We’re thrilled to have her back and just wish she could bring her adorable baby girl, Finley, in with her!

That’s how I met Dr. Marshall before he opened Marshall Orthodontics! They asked if I was willing to learn about the orthodontic field, I said yes, and I fell in love with it.” Today, Kayla’s work involves helping our patients with their braces by making adjustments and swapping out parts. The process has hooked her on orthodontics for good. “I love that I can work independently and that each appointment is different, even if I’m still going through the same process of taking wires off and putting new colors on. I also like that I can see my patients often, usually once a month rather than once or twice a year, to get familiar with them and their teeth and see how they change,” she says. When she isn’t working, Kayla spends all of her time with Finley, Luke, and their Australian shepherd, Bailey. Next time you come by our office for an adjustment, don’t forget to ask Kayla to see a photo of little Finley — she’s sure to have cute ones to share!

“I don’t like leaving her,” Kayla admits. “She’s attached to me for sure!”

Finley is Kayla’s first baby, and so far, she and her husband, Luke, have been thoroughly enjoying new parenthood. It has been a great adventure for them, despite the sleepless nights since she was born on Oct. 18. As much as Kayla loves staying home and snuggling with Finley, though, she says she was still happy to come back to work. She has worked side-by-side with Dr. Marshall since he first opened Marshall Orthodontics, and actually even before that. “In the beginning, I didn’t really have an interest in orthodontics. I never had braces or even knew what an orthodontist really did,” Kayla remembers. “But when I got my first dental assistant job, it was in a space split half and half with an orthodontics office.

SHOW YOUR KIDS YOU LOVE THEM THIS VALENTINE’S DAY BY CELEBRATING NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH For the last 75 years, Americans’ teeth have been getting a healthy, helpful boost from our water supply. Though many don’t realize it, communities across the country have been adding fluoride to their drinking water for decades as a way to prevent tooth decay and cavities and save people money on dental treatment. This February, during National Children’s Dental Health Month, the American Dental Association is highlighting that decision, and if you have kids at home, you might want to educate them about fluoride, too! Though talking about teeth isn’t exactly a Valentine’s Day tradition, promoting good oral health to your kids is a great way to show them how much you love them. Having strong teeth and a bright smile will set them up for success in the future, and if they understand the basic principles of keeping their teeth clean, they’ll reap the rewards down the line when they save on the cost of dental treatments like fillings, crowns, and veneers. You can start by visiting the ADA website and sharing the organization’s plethora of resources with your kids. At ADA.org/en/Public-Programs/ National-Childrens-Dental-Health-Month, you’ll find coloring pages, crossword puzzles, and mazes all themed around the fluoride in our taps. The sheets are free to download and print at home and even include “Healthy Smile Tips” that every kid should know, like “Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste” and “Clean between your teeth daily.” Another step to take this month if you haven’t already is scheduling dental and orthodontic check-ups for your children. Here at Marshall Orthodontics, we specialize in early orthodontic treatment for kids, and our experienced team is used to evaluating patients as young as 7. Having their teeth checked early can be really beneficial for kids by improving facial development and even reducing or eliminating the need for braces down the line. Reach out to us today at 864-336-2965 to schedule a free early evaluation for your child. There’s no better way to celebrate National Children’s Health Month than by doing what’s best for your kids!

LEARN ALL ABOUT LEAP YEAR

LEAP INTO 2020 FACTS ABOUT THE LEAP YEAR

Like the Olympics and presidential elections, leap years only occur once every

living in the U.S. is roughly 187,000. Some famous leaplings include motivational speaker Tony Robbins, rapper Ja Rule, and singer Mark Foster of Foster the People. However, the most famous leapling is probably Superman. When you invent a super-being, you might as well give him a super-birthday. WHERE Anthony, Texas/New Mexico (a single town that straddles the two states’ borders), claims the title “Leap Year Capital of the World.” The city throws one massive birthday party for all leaplings but invites everyone to join the celebration. Two leapling neighbors from Anthony began the tradition in 1988, and it’s blossomed into a festival with thousands of participants every four years. It includes banquets, hot air balloons, a carnival, concerts, parades, and more. When you have four years to plan in between each shindig, there’s time to go big. Celebrate this leap year by doing something unusual or new. It’s a special day that doesn’t occur often, so make the most of it by doing something you’ll talk about for another four years.

four years, which is why many people look forward to Feb. 29. But there’s a lot that you might not know about this quirk on the calendar. WHY To keep the calendar in sync with Earth’s orbit around the sun, an extra day is added to it every four years. Earth takes exactly 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to orbit the sun. Those extra hours add up over time, so another calendar day becomes necessary. But a leap year doesn’t occur every four years. Adding that extra day still doesn’t quite keep Earth on track, so the calendar skips leap years that occur during century years not divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 won’t be. WHO The odds of being born on Feb. 29 are 1 in 1,461. That means that of the roughly seven billion people in the world, only about five million of them are “leaplings.” The number of leaplings currently
