SUMMER IS UPON US, AND MY BATTERY IS CHARGED!
Oh, the Places We’ve Been
The start of our summer events is right around the corner, and between our 11-week summer program and seven Elite Pitchers Bootcamps, it’s an extremely busy time for us. We absolutely love it, but it is a grind. Knowing this, we try to get our batteries fully charged, and one way I love to do it is by traveling and taking in amazing sites. Almost everyone has a bucket list. In my 64 years of life, I have been very fortunate to cross several off with my wife, Jill. Rome. Paris. Normandy. London. Reykjavík. Barcelona. Munich. Amsterdam. Brussels. Cologne. Vienna. Budapest. Bratislava (Slovakia). Stockholm. Athens. Santorini. Ephesus (Turkey). Venice. Florence. Palermo. Milan. Naples. Bologna. Siena. Capri. Portofino. The French Rivera. Alaska. Cabo San Lucas. Cozumel, Cancun, Lake Como. Oslo & The Norwegian fjords. The Hawaiian Islands. Auckland (New Zealand). Every province in Canada (none of its territories). Nearly every major Caribbean Island (excluding Cuba and Haiti) and Madeira (Portugal). Whew. That’s a lot of travel! And we have loved nearly every moment of it. This spring, my wife and I checked off another item on our bucket list
with 18 days in French Polynesia. For those who don’t quite know what that region refers to, it comprises 121 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) in the South Pacific Ocean. We spent 18 days primarily in Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, and the Marquesas Islands. Fourteen days of that trip were spent on the cruise ship The Paul Gauguin (yes, named after the famous painter). It was truly a breathtaking experience. Obviously, Tahiti is labeled as “paradise,” and it did not disappoint. Here are just a few of the dozens and dozens of pictures we took on our trip. As you can see, Jill and I still got work done on the trip (Jill still did). I have to admit I got very little done, and thankfully, the scenery was so stunning that Jill didn’t seem to mind or notice. This is a great note for you husbands who want to just get away and do nothing for a week or so. I highly recommend some time in French Polynesia as part of anyone’s bucket list. As SNL’s famous skit featuring Garrett Morris playing Chico Escuela used to say, “Béisbol been bery bery good to me.” –Coach Ron Wolforth

BURNOUT BLUES The Truth About Year-Round Baseball
Many parents believe they are giving their children a great opportunity by enrolling them in year-round baseball programs. They assume that having their player compete in as many games as
possible will polish their skills and improve their chances of playing in college and beyond. Sadly, the opposite is usually true. As youth baseball becomes more competitive, it is easy to confuse performance with development. In reality, playing in a lot of games
A comparable example is raising a young musician. Few parents would ask a talented young singer or instrumentalist to perform in recitals or concerts year-round. It would be far better for that child to spend time practicing. Unfortunately, a growing number of coaches who profit from year-round youth baseball programs continue to promote them to parents. It is certainly possible to play baseball year-round and continue to develop your game, but I rarely see an athlete under 16 years of age who could pull that off. Human beings, and teenagers in particular, crave change and variety to stay fresh and maintain a sense of purpose. A growing number of pro sports’ greatest stars played different sports in high school, including the NFL’s Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Russell Wilson, who all played baseball and football. That doesn’t mean your child shouldn’t enjoy playing catch all 12 months of the year! But allowing them to try a variety of sports promises a better long-term outcome.
seldom produces a superior player. Competition must be mixed with development, which entails purposeful, intense practice. Development also equips a player to build the physical, mental, and emotional balance required to stick with baseball through the inevitable ups and downs and find meaning in the sport. This is different from playing a lot of games. Playing in a great number of games often has less impact on an athlete’s skill than many would hope. It is comparable to taking a test or quiz in school. It can serve as a yardstick of progress, but it can also lead to burnout and stagnation.

LOU GEHRIG’S ASTONISHING RECORD
• JULY 19–21 (FRI-SUN) • AUG. 2–4 (FRI-SUN) • AUG. 31–SEPT. 2 (SAT-MON)
On June 2, 1925, Yankee first baseman Wally Pipp complained about what would become the most famous headache in baseball history. Pipp told the Yankees’ manager he needed to sit out. That opening was all 21-year-old Lou Gehrig needed to move into the starting lineup — for the next 2,130 games! As the nation celebrates Lou Gehrig Day on June 2, it is worth noting that Gehrig’s record for the most consecutive games played stood until Cal Ripken Jr. broke it in 1995. Known for his power-hitting and speed, the Iron Horse is one of three players, along with Roberto Clemente and Jackie Robinson, to have days on the calendar reserved in their honor. “Lou was the most valuable player the Yankees ever had because he was the prime source of their greatest asset — an implicit confidence in themselves and every man on the club,” wrote a sportswriter of that era. As the nation remembers Gehrig, Major League Baseball aims to raise awareness of the need to fight ALS, the disease that ended Gehrig’s life in 1941. He was only 37 years old.

3 Ways to Build Healthy Habits MASTERING THE MARATHON
NO. 2 — SET SPECIFIC GOALS Setting clear, attainable goals can easily motivate you. Rather than vague aspirations, like “exercise more” or “eat healthy,” define your goals into objectives like “walk 20 minutes every day” or “eat vegetables with every meal.” These goals can be a road map for your journey as you can track your progress as time goes on. Consistently achieving these milestones will solidify your commitment to your new healthy habits. NO. 3 — STAY CONSISTENT Consistency is at the core of building a habit — establishing a routine that aligns with your health goals. A structured routine supports habit formation, and consistency reinforces it. If you miss a day of your new habit, a routine helps you bounce back into the structure without being hard on yourself. As you continue
The journey to healthier habits is a marathon, not a sprint, and as such, it is a daunting task. Here are three tips to help you begin your journey, whether your goal is to lose weight, improve your diet, work out regularly, or just establish a more balanced lifestyle. NO. 1 — START SMALL Start your journey to better health in small ways, as attempting drastic change can be overwhelming. You should first focus on incremental adjustments to your routine. If your goal is to exercise more, start with short walks in the evenings after dinner or take the stairs in the office instead of elevators. These changes lay the foundation for long-term success. Starting small will make it easier to transition to larger changes, like adding a morning workout or speeding up your evening walk into a jog.
building healthy habits, consistency will help ingrain them into your lifestyle. You can lay the groundwork for lasting, healthy habits by embracing these three tips. Small, gradual changes become the foundation for continued success, while clear objectives serve as milestones to celebrate success along the way. So, take joy in the process, celebrate the victories, and know that building these healthy habits is a marathon worth running.
