It’s Kitten Season!
May is commonly referred to as “kitten season” because it marks the peak of the breeding cycle for cats. During this time, the warmer weather and longer daylight hours trigger the reproductive hormones in female cats, leading to a surge in breeding. This results in a significant increase in the number of kittens born during spring and early summer, and thus, more kittens available for adoption! Cats are seasonal breeders, which means their reproductive cycles are influenced by the seasons. The natural cycle is such that cats are more likely to come into heat as the days start to get longer in the spring. The gestation period for cats is about two months, so the kittens are born when the weather is milder, which historically would have increased their chances of survival. Because of this natural breeding pattern, animal shelters and rescue organizations often see a substantial increase in the number of kittens they need to care for during this time. This influx can strain resources, making spring and early summer a crucial time for fostering and adopting campaigns to help manage the population and ensure that as many kittens as possible find homes.
