The 5 Keys To Constantly Progress & Avoid Failure A Workbook By Tony Robbins THE ULTIMATE RESOURCE:

Introduction

What is the real thing that gets in the way of the dreams that we want to manifest? There’s only one reason why people fail - fear. The most successful people find the resources because they’re resourceful. If you’re determined enough, you’ll get through the problem. The ultimate resources are human emotions. I want to walk you through the five things I did to get through fear. They helped transform my life starting when I was 17 years old, alone and homeless on Christmas Eve after my mom chased me out of the house with a knife in the midst of an argument with my stepfather. I had to figure out what to do with my life. These same 5 principles have helped millions of people break through their own fears and limits to achieve the life of their dreams. I hope they help you too. Before we dive in, let me share a little more of my story. I grew up in a chaotic and abusive home. My mom was an alcoholic and addicted to prescription drugs. There were times I watched her get beat up by my stepfathers. We had no money, and I remember us being so hungry at times that we’d put water in our cereal just to have something to eat. I was so angry and frustrated. I felt like I had no control over my life. But even in the midst of all that pain, I had this hunger, this sense that there had to be more to life. I would go to my rich friends’ houses and see that people really lived differently. It opened my eyes to what was possible. One day, it all came to a head and my mom chased me out of the house with a knife. I was terrified, but there was also a sense of freedom. I realized I could let my past control me, or I could create a new future. I was 17 years old, homeless, with just a few dollars in my pocket. But I decided no matter what, I was going to make something of my life. I remembered a man I’d worked for just a few months earlier. He was in his 70s and very successful. My family used to say “That guy used to be such a loser. Now he’s so successful.” I thought, if he can turn his life around, maybe I can too. I started studying what he did, how he thought. That began my lifelong quest to understand the difference in how successful and unsuccessful people think and what they do. What I discovered is that no matter how difficult our circumstances, we all have the power to change our lives . But to do that, we have to take control of our mental, emotional, and physical states. We have to feed our minds, strengthen our bodies, find role models, get the right people around us, and take massive action. Those are the 5 keys to breaking through fear and creating the life you want. Let’s go through each one together.

KEY 1

Feed and Strengthen Your Mind

If you’re feeling depressed, frustrated, fearful - you’ve got to feed your mind. Every single day you’ve got to feed and strengthen your mind. Leaders are readers. Don’t let a day go by without reading 30 minutes a day. Read something that’s gonna make you grow - a philosophy to guide your life or a strategy that makes you more successful. This saved me when I was homeless at 17. A few months earlier, I had worked for a man moving houses, and he shared with me how his life changed by going to a seminar. It cost $35, which was a week’s pay for me working as a janitor making $40 a week. But I decided to invest in myself. And those ideas from the seminar kept me going when I was at rock bottom sleeping on the streets. I took buses to a bookstore and bought a book, The Magic of Believing by Claude Bristol, with the little money I had. It was about training your mind for certainty and belief. I did the exercises, like writing my goals on the mirror with soap. It transformed me. I stopped being depressed and started conditioning my mind daily. I’ll never forget going to that bookstore in Claremont, California. I rode the bus 40 minutes each way to get there. And I remember sitting on the floor for hours reading, immersing myself. It was a success and spiritual bookstore. I couldn’t afford to buy a bunch of books, so I’d read them there, taking notes. I went to the library too, but I always invested in at least one book, so I had more skin in the game. I treated those books like gold. I never missed a day reading. And as I started to get my life together, make a little money, I started buying audio programs to listen to while I was driving or working out. I remember spending $300, an enormous sum for me then, on a set of cassette tapes and workbooks from a guy named Jim Rohn. I listened to those tapes over and over till they practically disintegrated. I was hungry to learn. Leaders are readers. Earners are learners. You’ve got to stand guard at the door of your mind and be proactive about feeding it, strengthening it, conditioning it for success and positivity every day. What you put in shapes you. I’ll never forget, Jim Rohn said, “Every day, stand guard at the door of your mind.” He gave the analogy of a cup of coffee. If your best friend drops a teaspoon of strychnine in there accidentally, you’re dead. What gets in your mind, even by accident, can poison you if you’re not careful. You have to proactively decide what goes in.

KEY 1: Feed And Strengthen Your MInd

He taught me to read a minimum of 30 minutes a day of something that instructed me, taught me a new skill, or inspired me. Not the news. Not social media. Something that would shape me into the kind of person that could achieve my dreams. At first, I thought I didn’t have time. But he said, miss a meal if you have to, but never miss your 30 minutes of reading. I still do that to this day. And with audio books and podcasts, there’s no excuse. You can do it while you’re commuting, working out, taking a walk. Turn your car into a mobile classroom. I promise you if you read just 30 pages of a good book each day, it’ll change your life.

KEY 2

Feed and Strengthen Your Body

You’ve got to do something physical each day that makes you feel strong. I like to do a cold plunge - the intensity trains my mind and body. Working out hard physically makes you feel mentally strong too. Fear is physical, so is courage. Push your body and your mind will follow. I grew up in a crazy environment. I wasn’t treating my body well. But as I started to change my life, I realized I had to train my body as much as my mind. And they reinforce each other. Now I can get myself to do almost anything physically because I’ve conditioned that muscle for decades. When I jump in that freezing 56 degree water, there’s never a time I want to do it. But I don’t negotiate with myself. I train myself that when I say go, we go. And after, in that extreme cold, every organ in my body is alive, every nerve is on fire. I feel like a million bucks, and I’m ready to attack the day. It’s that discipline of body and mind. It doesn’t have to be two hours in the gym. Even 10-15 minutes, but intense. Break a sweat. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Three to five days a week, do something that really challenges you physically. Because the physical affects the mental. It makes you alert, alive, strong, and confident. I couldn’t afford a gym in those early days. So I’d do sprints on the beach until I felt like I was going to collapse. I’d do pushups and dips on park benches until my arms trembled. I’d find a hill and run up it as fast as I could over and over. No equipment needed. The key was intensity. It made me feel alive and in control of my life. I remember I used to hate running. I never saw the point. But I was listening to an audio by a Navy SEAL commander named Jocko Willink. He said that discipline equals freedom. And that when you don’t feel like doing something, that’s exactly when you need to do it. So the next morning, I didn’t want to run. And I thought about what he said. I put on my shoes and went out the door. I started running and I felt that resistance, wanting to stop. But I pushed through. I ended up going 5 miles, way more than I’d ever run before. And as I was running, I realized that if I could conquer myself in that moment, I could conquer myself in any moment. The discipline I developed in my body gave me freedom in my mind. I’ve been running ever since.

KEY 3

Find a Great Role Model

Find someone who started with nothing like you and achieved great success. Study what they did differently. Success leaves clues. I found mentors like Sir John Templeton, who became wealthy by living principles like saving 50% of his income and investing when others were fearful. Knowing someone like you has done it shows you the pathway to power. It gives you certainty. John Templeton said you make your most money in times of maximum pessimism. When World War 2 broke out and the markets crashed, he borrowed money to buy stocks for pennies on the dollar. That one decision made him millions, eventually billions. When I was 17 and homeless, I met a man in his early 70s who was incredibly wealthy, fit, and happy. And I later found out my own family used to say “He was such a loser, and now he’s so successful!” I was blown away. How does someone go from loser to ultra successful? I helped him move some houses to make extra money beyond my minimum wage janitor job. And over a couple days working together, he shared how his life transformed. He told me he went to a seminar by a man named Jim Rohn and it revolutionized how he saw himself and his future. He started reading, listening, and applying the ideas every day until they took hold. He became one of my first real role models and mentors. Seeing that it was possible for someone like him, someone like me, to radically transform, that planted a seed in me. I thought if he could do it, I could do it. But I had to apply the same principles he did. Work on myself every day. Feed my mind. Strengthen my body. And take massive action on the ideas and dreams I was discovering. Having a role model like that, who started with nothing, shapes how you see the world. You start to think like them. Who you spend time with is who you become. Find someone you want to be like and begin the process of modeling their mindset and action. I’ve made it a principle to find role models and mentors at every stage of my life, for every area I want to grow in. If I want to master a subject, I find someone who’s world-class at it. I read their books, I study their interviews, and if possible, I find a way to connect with them or work with them directly. Success leaves clues. People who succeed consistently are not lucky; they’re doing something different than everyone else. They have a different mindset, a different strategy, a different approach. One of my favorite questions to ask when I’m in a challenging situation is: What would the best in the world do right now? If it’s a business problem, I imagine what Warren Buffett or Steve Jobs would do. If it’s a relationship problem, I think about what my most loving and wise friends would do. If it’s a health issue, I consider what an Olympic athlete would do. Having these archetypes trains your brain to think at a higher level.

KEY 4

Proximity is Power

You need to get around people playing the game of life at a higher level than you. It’s uncomfortable but that’s how you grow - just like playing tennis with someone better than you forces your skills to improve.

I’ll never forget a billionaire friend of mine, Peter Guber, Academy Award winning producer, owner of the Golden State Warriors, LA Dodgers, and more. He told me: “Proximity is power.” He encouraged me to get around investment bankers, celebrities, successful entrepreneurs, even when I felt out of place and didn’t have a specific agenda. He said eventually, just by being in that environment, opportunities would come to me. He was right. One of those relationships led to a deal that made $50 million. It was life-changing. Another time, I was invited on a trip with a group of extremely successful businessmen. At first, I felt like I didn’t belong. It was my first time on private jets, going to exotic locations. I felt out of my league. But one of them, Jerry Buss, owner of the LA Lakers, pulled me aside and said I was selling myself short. He said at my age, 19-20 years old, he’d lost a million dollars and had nothing. He told me I belonged in the group and to start thinking bigger. It shifted my mindset. A few months later on another trip, he asked me what my goals were. I sheepishly told him I wanted to help people, maybe even be president someday. He asked if I knew any investment bankers. I said no. He said that was my problem. I had a vision but I wasn’t putting myself in proximity to the people who could help me get there. He pushed me to take a meeting with an investment banker friend of his. I didn’t want to waste their time but I did it. And it led to a partnership that eventually earned me $400 million in a day when our company went public. All because I got in proximity and stayed in proximity even when it was uncomfortable. Proximity is so powerful. Think about it, I didn’t ask to be in a bunch of movies and TV shows. It happened because I was around actors and directors who were fans without me even trying. You get more done through proximity than anything else. You want to get in proximity to the people, places and ideas that can move you forward. Even if you feel uncomfortable and out of place, push yourself to get in those environments. Grab a coffee. Offer value. Build relationships. You never know where it could lead. Jim Rohn said you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Tony Hsieh, the founder of Zappos, said the best way to change yourself is to change your environment. Your environment is stronger than your willpower. So if you want to make a change, the first place to start is to put yourself in a new environment that forces you to think and act differently. When I first moved to LA to start my business, I was living in a tiny apartment in a bad neighborhood. I was struggling to make ends meet. But I started going to seminars and networking events. I’d put on my cheap suit and show up trying to build relationships. I remember meeting a real estate investor at one of these. I asked him for advice.

TONY ROBBINS’ 5 KEYS TO CONSTANTLY PROGRESS & AVOID FAILURE

10

KEY 4: Proximity is Power

He told me my first step needed to be moving into a better environment. He said, “You can’t think like a millionaire if you’re living like a broke person.” It struck me. I went home that day and found a way to get a small apartment in a nicer area. Just being in that environment shifted how I saw myself. I started dressing differently, acting differently. People started to perceive me differently. And it opened up new opportunities. Later, when I could afford it, I moved to a neighborhood where there were actors, directors, and producers. I’d see them at the coffee shop and the gym. We’d strike up conversations. Some of those people ended up being instrumental in my success. But I never would have met them if I didn’t put myself in that environment. Your environment is either lifting you up or pulling you down. The people you surround yourself with are either increasing your standard or decreasing it. If you want to get to the next level, you have to be intentional about getting in proximity to the right environments and people.

KEY 5

Take Massive Action

With your mind and body strong, a great role model, and the right people around you - now it’s about taking massive action. Do. Try. Learn what works. If it doesn’t work, change your approach. Keep improving and changing until you get the results. I remember early in my career, I was in one of these “proximity is power” type groups. But I wasn’t taking massive action. The billionaire in the group, Peter Guber, called me out. He said by getting around them I had a once in a lifetime opportunity. Most people let those moments pass by. He challenged me to set up at least 50 meetings with people in the group over the next year. I didn’t feel ready but I did it. And one of those meetings led to a $400 million deal. Another example: After I conquered my own obesity, I wanted to help others do the same. I created a program and started doing infomercials because that’s what I could figure out with my limited resources at the time. They worked, but not at the scale I wanted. So I took more action. I kept asking, how do I reach more people? Get this message out to the masses? I promoted the program on radio, newspapers, magazines. I did 3-hour free seminars in every major city each weekend to spread the word. I gave the product to influential people and asked them to share it if they liked it. I kept taking action and innovating, and it grew into a billion dollar a year business. I helped millions of people. The biggest mistake is thinking you have to wait to be ready or perfect to take action. No. Take action now, fail forward fast, and you’ll learn and grow in the process. If you’re not getting results, take more action. Change your approach. Just keep moving. Repetition is the mother of skill. And most people give up way too soon. There’s a great book called The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. His premise is that we underestimate how much action it takes to get the results we want. We think it’ll take 2-3 steps, but it really takes 20-30. Once you understand that, you stop being disappointed by failure. You expect it and keep going. I love the quote “Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” We overestimate what we can do in a year, but we underestimate what we can do in a decade. Most people overestimate their capabilities and underestimate their lack of consistency. They get excited about a new idea, they start, but then they stop when it gets hard. I’ve found that success is never owned, it’s only rented - and the rent is due every day. The thing that gets you to your goal isn’t one giant action, it’s small actions repeated consistently over time. It’s getting up every day and doing the work, even when you don’t feel like it. Especially when you don’t feel like it.

Conclusion

Those five principles have guided my life and the lives of countless people I’ve been blessed to inspire and serve. Whenever I feel stuck or scared, I return to this list. Because the ultimate resource is human emotion and creativity. And these five keys unlock that:

1. Feed your mind 2. Strengthen your body 3. Find a role model

4. Get in proximity to the right people 5. Take massive action and keep changing your approach

I also add a 6th bonus principle: Always give more than you expect to receive. The secret to living is giving. If you do more for others than anyone else, if you find a way to add more value, you’ll never have to worry about success. I’m not lucky. I wasn’t born this way. I’m a kid from Azusa, California with a crazy family, no special connections or education. I’ve faced unbelievable hardships and failures. But I used these 5 principles to turn my biggest struggles into my greatest strengths and successes. I’m not special, so believe me, you can do it too.

You now have a simple but powerful tool kit to break through fear and achieve your dreams. Remember to use these 5 principles daily.

You are the ultimate resource. You have everything inside you to create the life you deserve. It’s not about your past or your resources. It’s about your creativity, determination and action. The only thing that can stop you, is you. And now you have the tools to ensure that never happens.

If an abused kid from Azusa, California can use these 5 keys to go from homeless to serving presidents, impacting millions and achieving massive success, so can you.

Remember:

• Leaders are readers. Your life changes when your habits change. • Strength comes to those who take action before they’re ready. • Success leaves clues. Model those who’ve achieved what you want. • Proximity is power. Change your environment, change your life. • Most people overestimate what they can do in a year and underestimate what they can do in a decade. Take relentless action and never give up.

It’s time to go live the life of your dreams. I’ll see you out there.
