Tony Robbins' 5 Keys To Constantly Progress And Avoid Failu…

KEY 3

Find a Great Role Model

Find someone who started with nothing like you and achieved great success. Study what they did differently. Success leaves clues. I found mentors like Sir John Templeton, who became wealthy by living principles like saving 50% of his income and investing when others were fearful. Knowing someone like you has done it shows you the pathway to power. It gives you certainty. John Templeton said you make your most money in times of maximum pessimism. When World War 2 broke out and the markets crashed, he borrowed money to buy stocks for pennies on the dollar. That one decision made him millions, eventually billions. When I was 17 and homeless, I met a man in his early 70s who was incredibly wealthy, fit, and happy. And I later found out my own family used to say “He was such a loser, and now he’s so successful!” I was blown away. How does someone go from loser to ultra successful? I helped him move some houses to make extra money beyond my minimum wage janitor job. And over a couple days working together, he shared how his life transformed. He told me he went to a seminar by a man named Jim Rohn and it revolutionized how he saw himself and his future. He started reading, listening, and applying the ideas every day until they took hold. He became one of my first real role models and mentors. Seeing that it was possible for someone like him, someone like me, to radically transform, that planted a seed in me. I thought if he could do it, I could do it. But I had to apply the same principles he did. Work on myself every day. Feed my mind. Strengthen my body. And take massive action on the ideas and dreams I was discovering. Having a role model like that, who started with nothing, shapes how you see the world. You start to think like them. Who you spend time with is who you become. Find someone you want to be like and begin the process of modeling their mindset and action. I’ve made it a principle to find role models and mentors at every stage of my life, for every area I want to grow in. If I want to master a subject, I find someone who’s world-class at it. I read their books, I study their interviews, and if possible, I find a way to connect with them or work with them directly. Success leaves clues. People who succeed consistently are not lucky; they’re doing something different than everyone else. They have a different mindset, a different strategy, a different approach. One of my favorite questions to ask when I’m in a challenging situation is: What would the best in the world do right now? If it’s a business problem, I imagine what Warren Buffett or Steve Jobs would do. If it’s a relationship problem, I think about what my most loving and wise friends would do. If it’s a health issue, I consider what an Olympic athlete would do. Having these archetypes trains your brain to think at a higher level.
