T he NSRA Safety Inspection Manual has always stated that unconventional steering com- ponents are not allowed. Recently I was asked to look at the “Steer Clear Steering System” and hopefully give them my approval as the NSRA National Safety Director. After obtaining a unit manufactured by Wizard Fabrication I opened the sealed aluminum case. Inside there was an offset steering coupler con- sisting of upper and lower sprock- ets, shafts, bearings, tensioner glides, and a riveted steel roller chain. The chain is continuous with no master link and is preloaded to help eliminate initial elongation. There are four tensioning guides inside the case that are preset to

control backlash. Since the case is sealed the tensioners are set and there is never a need to adjust it and since it’s all in a sealed case, dirt or any external particles could never jam the chain. I was told by the owner of Wizard Fabrication, David O’Conner, that it can be mounted vertically or at an angle, inside or outside the firewall, depending on where the lower shaft needs to extend through the firewall. In 2006 the Steer Clear System won both the SEMA “Best New Street Rod or Custom Car Product” and “Best Engineered New Product.” Several very reputable pro- fessional builders told me they have been using the units and have had

no issues with them. Considering all the above and as the NSRA National Safety Director I can find no reason not to approve the use of this device and would use it if I had a need. My decision is effective immediately the Wizard Fabrication Steer Clear System, if properly installed on a vehicle, will pass #9 Steering on the inspection sheet. No other chain driven steer- ing components, especially home- made ones, will be approved. If you have any further questions, contact me at nsra.safety23@gmail.com or 870-931-8118. I’ll have one of the units at each of the shows I’m attending throughout 2025. Roger Barnhill National Safety Director
