If you are silent about your pain, they'll kill you and say you
enjoyed it. Zora Neale Hurston
There are many reports about the abuse of women in the Media sector, and it shows up through varied expressions. Lenina Rassool is a leading journalist on GBVF and producer/presenter of the Womxn Show on Cape Town TV. She highlights that this is only a glimpse of women’s struggle in the media space. In an interview with the Collective Action Magazine, she shares her view on the apologetic ambience and stigma that comes forth, when women are given spaces and platforms for visibility. In my many conversations with women about why they are nervous about being seen or interviewed, even talking about themselves and their work, or seen to be apologising for their visibility, there is a deep fear of judgment and backlash. The irony is that the only way to increase representation and visibility of gender issues and GBV is by being seen.
