It can also be seen in the contribution they would have made to the national GDP as income earners and revenue generators. There is also the cost of providing interventions like medical and legal support to victims of VAWG, which could have been used to invest in other growth sectors. It is estimated that VAWG costs the global economy about $8 trillion annually. Reduced productivity and absenteeism at work/ school are prevalent amongst victims of VAWG, as they tend to injuries sustained or they remain hidden due to shame and fear of being stigmatised. Society pays heavily for VAWG through interventions provided to victims and survivors like medical care, counselling, legal support, shelter, and economic empowerment (which is still not adequate in some developing countries, like Nigeria). The responsibility to end VAWG is a collective one, considering the costs are quite collective. A society that is looking at thriving and developing to its best capacity will need to prioritise advancing the rights of women and girls and mitigating barriers like VAWG.
