SOLUTIONS FOR BY
the community,
the community
By Sazini Mojapelo, Interim CEO, GBVF Response Fund1
Gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) are pervasive problems in South Africa, affecting women and girls across the country. Despite efforts by the government, private sector, and civil society to address this pandemic, innovative and collaborative solutions are required. In this article, we will explore some of the ways that communities in South Africa are taking action to end GBVF.
An approach that has gained traction is community-led initiatives, where communities are empowered to identify and solve their own GBVF problems, which are at times deep- rooted. This approach recognises that community members have a deep understanding of the issues they face and are often best placed to develop effective solutions. By involving the community in the decision-making process, there is a greater sense of ownership and commitment to the solutions developed.
