1) Accurately size the cervical collar 2) Correctly fit the cervical collar 3) Continuously monitor the injured persons airway and breathing 4) Continuously monitor the injured persons facial colour for indications of jugular vein compression, this could be indicated by a change in facial colour 5) Remove the cervical collar as soon as it is possible to support the head and maintain the airway by other means.
