ADVANCE

W r i t t e n i n t h e blood of five martyrs is the thrill ing story of “The Auca Advance” set in the dense jungles of Ecuador. Pictorially told on these pages are a few of the inspiring and challenging scenes taken from Harper and Brothers new publication The Savage M y Kinsman by Betty Elliot. Some of the pictures were made by a LIFE photo grapher who had covered the story previously. Before he left the jungles he taught Mrs. Elliot how to operate the camera and to capture the natives on film. The ut ter simplicity of these people is extremely interesting. The directness of their thinking and conversation offers some challenges to our highly developed civilization. Mrs. Elliot confesses that she was faced with the fact that socially she really had nothing to offer the Aucas. With all their ferocity, they have no drunkenness. The light of the Gospel has penetrated the jungle vast nesses, bringing redemption and peace to hungry hearts. May these pictures cause us again to realize the truth that “ the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” Pray for Mrs. Elliot and for her small daughter Valerie as daily they carry on this story of God’s grace bring ing human trophies for His praise.

Betty Elliot's decision to seek out and live with the savage tribe that had killed her husband was not an easy one. The Aucas had always killed outsiders.
