The AI Toolkit for K-12 Education

How do you talk to AI tools?

To get the best results from a generative AI tool, you need to give it clear instructions. This is called prompting. A prompt is what you type or say to the AI. The better your prompt, the better the answer you’ll get.

Here are a few tips:

Be Specific Instead of saying “Tell me about animals,” try “Tell me three interesting facts about dolphins. ” Give Examples If you want the AI to write something a certain way, give an example. Like, “Write a polite email like this: ‘Dear Principal Smith, I’m writing to follow up on our meeting from last week …’ I need to ask for an extension on a deadline. ” Ask For What You Want You can ask the AI to explain, write, help, fix, or even pretend. Like, “Pretend you’re a history teacher. Explain World War II in simple terms. ” Use Follow-up Questions If you don’t like the first answer, ask again or say what you want differently. Like, “Can you make it shorter?” or “Use simpler words. ” Just remember: the AI doesn’t read your mind; it follows your words. The clearer you are, the better the help you’ll get.
