On the Horizon: What is NMN?
Dr Brad McEwen explores NMN and why this emerging longevity nutraceutical is gaining attention for its role in healthy ageing and metabolic health
What it is NMN? Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a naturally occurring compound in the body that has become a key focus in healthy ageing and metabolic health. NMN helps the body produce NAD+, a vital molecule needed for everyday cellular functions such as energy production, cell repair, and healthy communication between cells. As we age, NAD+ levels naturally decline, and this drop can be accelerated by conditions linked to heart and metabolic health. Lower NAD+ levels are associated with reduced energy efficiency, increased oxidative stress and inflammation. By supporting NAD+ levels, NMN is thought to help maintain healthy metabolism, energy production, blood vessel function, and inflammatory balance as we age. How it works: Early research suggests that NMN may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body while supporting healthy energy production at a cellular level. It may also assist with blood sugar balance and insulin function, while helping to support healthy blood
vessels, circulation and heart health, including maintaining flexibility in the arteries. Additional findings point to potential benefits for brain health, particularly in areas such as memory and learning. Together, these effects position NMN as a promising option for supporting metabolic balance and helping the body remain resilient as it ages. What the research says: Emerging human studies are now supporting earlier laboratory findings on NMN. Clinical research suggests that NMN supplementation may offer benefits for heart and metabolic health, including improvements in blood sugar control, cholesterol levels and blood pressure, as well as supporting healthy blood vessel function. Improvements in how muscles respond to insulin have also been observed, which is an important marker of metabolic health. In a 28-day randomised, placebo-controlled study, middle-aged and older adults with overweight or obesity were given NMN or a placebo. Those taking NMN showed increased
Research findings indicate NMN has potential neuroprotective benefits, including support for memory and learning.
