HudsonAlpha Impact Report 2023

INFORMATION IS POWER CONTINUES TO GROW HudsonAlpha’s Information is Power initiative is making genetic testing for cancer risk more accessible than ever before. The test checks for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, as well as other genes, to inform participants of their risk for developing breast, ovarian, colon, prostate, pancreatic, and endometrial cancers. Since launching in 2015, more than 6,400 people have participated in Information is Power. Funding from the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation , the Alabama Power Foundation , the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama, the Daniel Foundation of Alabama, and the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville’s Racial Equity Fund has made it possible to expand the program’s local and statewide partnerships, including collaborations with Alabama A&M University, Miles College, Alabama State University, Talladega College and the Rural Health Medical Program.

Information is Power has reframed the way I look at my future. I wish that my grandmother and aunts who passed away from breast cancer had a chance to know their risk and prepare. I didn’t have enough time with them. Information is Power is worth it because of the opportunity you gain to have more time with your loved ones. — Jessica Sanders, Information is Power participant
