HudsonAlpha Impact Report 2023

Jim Hudson and the late Lonnie McMillian founded HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology with the goal of uniting scientific research, education, and economic development under one organization dedicated to improving life through genomics. As we celebrated our 15th anniversary this year, I can proudly say that we have risen to our founders’ challenge; HudsonAlpha is changing the world through scientific breakthroughs, inspiring millions of learners through STEM education, and sparking significant economic impact in the state of Alabama. To mark this special occasion, we celebrated with a 15th Anniversary Series of public talks and events that helped connect people with HudsonAlpha’s mission. Celebrating this milestone with members of our community who attended anniversary series events was truly special. Thank you for participating and making this year so memorable. Over the last year, with your support, HudsonAlpha pioneered discoveries that improve human health and well-being. Our scientists made discoveries in pancreatic and ovarian cancer that could impact drug treatment for chemo-resistant cancers, continued to make advances in understanding and diagnosing rare disease, and applied cutting-edge single-cell technology to identify new genes related to Alzheimer’s disease. Our plant genomics program continues to tackle some of our world’s most critical challenges as we work to solve global hunger and protect our planet. Our recently dedicated Terry & Herb Lewis Demonstration Garden allows the public to learn about and interact with the plants that contribute to this research, many of which are growing in the Kathy L. Chan Greenhouse adjacent to the garden. In addition to our research programs, HudsonAlpha continued to have a far-reaching impact across our community, our state, and beyond through our Educational Outreach and Economic Development initiatives. Our educational programs reached over 1.5 million students, teachers, and learners over the last year, and a third-party study recorded that HudsonAlpha had a $4.2 billion economic impact on our state. Because of your outstanding support, HudsonAlpha faces a bright future marked by continued discovery, innovation, and progress. Thank you! Together, we are harnessing the promise of genomics to advance healthcare, foster a cleaner and healthier planet, and improve people’s lives today and tomorrow.
