no righteousness. Before a man can know peace he must know Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, who has made peace through the blood of the cross, as his own Saviour. "There is no peace saith the Lord to the wicked," and never can be. Peace is founded upon righteousness. Joy. In the third place there can be no joy where there is no peace. Joy means thankfulness, gladness, some- thing to rejoice over. The believer has joy as a gift from the Prince of Peace. John 15:11-17:13. The joy of the Lord is the believer's strength. See how logical the order is: Joy be- cause peace reigns; peace reigns, be- cause His righteousness is imputed and imparted to us. Lesson 3. October 20. Golden Text, John 6:37. "Him that cometh unto me I will in no wise cast out." A glorious golden text. As big as the world-wide whosoever of the Gos- pels, as bright as the stars of the morning and as gracious as the Lord Jesus Himself. Get the picture. It is the universal attitude of God in His relation to lost men, from the first call of God in the garden, "Where art t hou ?" to the closing "Whosoever will, let him come," of Revelation. He stands with open arms, saying "Come." The text is best realized in the picture of Christ upon the cross. With arms outstretched, with blood dripping from five open wounds, offering shelter to, every sin-laden soul in the cursed world. When God sees the blood upon the lintel and door post of that house, He passes over. No soul sheltered under those pierced hands shall come into judgment. In this lesson we are impressed with the fact of our Lord's intimate knowl- edge concerning those who come to Him. "He needeth not that any should testify of man, for He knew what was in man." Jno. 2:25. He knew the heart of this mother as well as He knew what was in the heart of the centurion. He purposed to respond to the heart

Golden Text, Romans 14:17 Men magnify non-essentials in the Christian life. They make much of the form and ceremony, exalt the outward observation of rules and regulations, and put a high value upon religious rites. They are careful about the husk and careless about the kernel. Of what avail is a whitewashed exterior if within there is a charnel house? The lips may prattle soft sayings and the life give the lie to the lips. Of what avail the external washings of the hands and feet, the bowing and bending, the intellectual assent to the tradition of the elders, so long as the heart is cold and formal toward God and hard as flint toward the fellow man? Our Lord is here un- masking the masqueraders and showing that hypocritical pretension will not stand the light of day. He called them hypocrites, actors, playing a part, wear- ing the livery of heaven to serve the devil and their own lusts. In the sight of God and in the sight of man the foul- est of all foul beings is the one who plays the part of a follower of the lowly Christ and who at heart is a denier of the Truth. The substance of the lesson is beware of the traditions of man, for they make void the Word of God. Three things in the Golden Text are said to characterize the children of the Kingdom. Righteousness. A right relation to God. There is much talk of civic right- eousness and social righteousness, but there can be no real righteousness until the heart is right with God. Righteousness is not attained through any efforts of men. No wash- ing, no church-going, no promise mak- ing, no committee working, no wheel turning or no money giving can make a man right with God. Righteousness is imparted to the heliever through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. The only thing that can cleanse the foul heart and soiled hands of men is the blood of the Lamb. Peace. The second thing is peace. There can be no peace where there is
