A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

This week our Year 12 A Level Fashion and Textiles students visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, while the Year 12 Biology students attended the annual Biology in Action event. I am sure both these trips were inspirational! Finally, yesterday, our Year 12 languages students had the opportunity to take part in a journalism competition. SCOOP! is a fast-paced language and journalism event for students, which challenged their skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Sophie C has applied to the Newnham College’s Essay Writing Masterclass Programme and despite fierce competition, I am delighted to announce that she has been offered a place on the Programme. Huge congratulations to Sophie for applying and getting a place! Next week, we look forward to welcoming the parents and carers of the Year 12 A Level French students into the school on Monday evening, where the trip leaders, Ms Summers and Mr Bharadia will go through the details of the upcoming trip to Paris. All relevant details have been sent out. On Tuesday evening and as part of their A Level studies, Year 12 Drama students will watch a performance at the Rose Theatre, which I am certain, they will all thoroughly enjoy. Moreover, on Thursday and as part of their A Level studies, Year 12 French students will spend the day at the BFI, students will take part in a range of activities to challenge and grow their vocabulary skills while discussing a range of films from across the exam boards.

Have a lovely weekend!

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen “When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.” Through the eyes of nine-year-old Ade, we see a dystopian London be infiltrated by the “Bluchers”, menacing plants, dissolving all buildings in sight. Ade’s stabil- ity is at risk, and with a mother to care for and no chance of escape, he’s all on his own. Its unique exploration of themes such as depression, sacrifice, bravery and death make this book, despite it being a science fiction, radiate reality. Ade’s perspective of his story is handled with maturity and care, reflecting his role as a young carer that could easily place him as one of the thousands in our world. At a time of world conflicts infiltrating our lives, the ‘Boy in the Tower’ makes readers believe in true, beautiful human kindness through the relationships Ade builds throughout the novel. This book is for anyone who needs a pick me up, and is an incredibly accessible read for all! - Aisha Y, Year 12
