Family-Centric Work HOW MY LOVE FOR FAMILY DRIVES MY PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Many people often describe parenting and working full time as a balancing act, but I see it differently. To me, being a mom and a managing attorney are both full-time jobs, and I make a conscious effort to keep them separate. I'm proud and grateful for the opportunity to excel in both roles without letting them overlap. On Sept. 16, we celebrate National Working Parents Day, a day dedicated to acknowledging and honoring the incredible efforts parents put into raising their children while also pursuing their professional goals. I truly love what I do. I love my family, and I love helping others. My work in estate planning allows me to protect families, which gives me a deep sense of purpose. Having the ability to change lives is a true gift I’ll never take for granted. At the same time, being a mom and embracing all the activities that come with it brings me immense joy. I love playing with my kids, embracing all of the little moments, and watching them grow and flourish. “Passion for my own loved ones is what motivates and inspires the work I do for others.” While it may seem like I'm sometimes pulled in two different directions, I see my career and my family as complementary parts of who I am. I strive to ensure neither aspect takes away from the other — they work in harmony and enrich my life in different but equally important ways.
drives me to help other families as well. This passion for my own loved ones is what motivates and inspires the work I do for others.
To fully embrace both parts of my identity, I make a conscious effort to keep them separate. When I’m at work, my focus is entirely on my job, and when I’m
at home, my attention is fully on my family. I strive to be present in the moment,
whether we are having a family movie night, celebrating at my child's award ceremony, or cheering at a soccer game. I deliberately put my phone away and avoid checking emails when I’m with my family. I don’t let myself feel guilty for being at work, nor do I feel guilty for spending quality time at home instead of putting in extra hours. I simply enjoy where I am and what I’m doing. Sometimes, I choose to stay late at work, and other times I leave early to be with my family. I'm incredibly fortunate and blessed to have the flexibility that allows me to balance these two very important roles in my life without any regrets.
So, in celebration of National Working Parents Day, I want to give a shoutout to all the amazing moms and dads who pour their hearts into both their families and their careers. It’s not an easy feat, and it looks different for everyone, but to me, you’re all superheroes! Here’s to you!

the rights of injured people, and now, I am able to help people plan for the unexpected to protect their families,” Joanne tells us. “It’s lovely to be involved in the thoughtful planning process to create peace of mind. To give our clients security is a very gratifying process.” Hands down, Joanne’s favorite aspect of her career is the camaraderie, contact, and relationship building that happens with the clients. “I’m a hand-holder and a people person, and I love creating that position of trust with our clients.” Outside of work, Joanne feels blessed to have her family. “My children are having children!” she says with pride. Joanne feels fortunate that her mom is local and able to share in the joy of their multi-generational family. She loves to see the bonds that can be formed between the old and
Joanne grew up in North San Diego County. She left to attend college and law school and then raised her family and practiced law in Northern California for many years. About five years ago, she returned to this area and loves serving the community she grew up in! “I always knew I wanted to do something to help others, particularly helping people who don’t have a voice and need assistance. In workers’ compensation law, I was able to help advocate for
the young and being right in the middle. Also, she feels so blessed and proud to be surrounded by so much love. When she isn’t enjoying time with her family, she and her husband love to get outdoors, walk, hike with their dog, and travel. “I find my center and inspiration in nature,” she says. Joanne, we are so thrilled you have chosen to call Shoup Legal home. Welcome back to North San Diego County!

ESTATE PLANNING AS A SELF‑IMPROVEMENT STRATEGY In the Name of Self-Care As humans, we are a constant work in progress. September is Self- Improvement Month — a time to focus on personal development and making positive changes in various aspects of our lives. When self-improvement comes to mind, you likely think of learning new skills, adopting healthier habits, or pursuing professional growth, but it should also encompass financial well- being and planning out your future. That’s why estate planning is a key aspect of personal development. It ensures your financial security and the well-being of your loved ones. By taking the time to establish an estate plan, you not only protect your assets but also provide peace of mind for yourself, your family, and your friends. It’s a proactive step to ensure your wishes are honored and your family is taken care of. After all, the future is always uncertain!

One of the greatest benefits of estate planning is the ability to control and manage your assets. By creating a will, trust, or other legal documents, you can dictate how your assets will be distributed after your passing. This way, you can make informed decisions about who will inherit your wealth and how it will be divided. Estate planning also enables you to appoint guardians for minor children and make arrangements for their care. Additionally, estate planning can help minimize the burden on your family during an already challenging time. Without an estate plan, your loved ones may face legal challenges and financial difficulties as they navigate the probate process. When your wishes are clearly outlined, you alleviate the stress and confusion that can arise without a plan! Incorporating estate planning into your self-improvement journey makes a commitment to long-term financial security and the welfare of your family. It empowers you to take control of your financial future, protect your assets, and ensure your wishes are carried out. Invest in your future with estate planning!

3 | Delicious Chickpea Curry 4 | The Joy of Apple Picking
Most of the apples you find in stores are ripening now, making September prime apple-picking season! When green apples begin to turn yellow and red apples brighten in color, they are ready to be gathered up. If you are looking for a great excuse to get out in nature with your family or just hankering for some fresh produce, then apple picking is the thing for you. Orchards all over the country have a you-pick season so you can bring home your own fresh apples. Here is how to get in on the apple-picking trend right now! How do you like them apples? If you and your kids aren’t paying to pick apples, and you don’t have the owner’s permission, that’s stealing. If you (or someone else) pay your kids to pick apples, that is child labor, which is, sadly, also illegal. Kidding aside, for the most part, to pick apples at an orchard, you must pay for the privilege. Orchards all across the country have different varieties of apples ripening all the time. Whether you’re in Maine, Michigan, California, or somewhere in between, you are likely ready to go on an apple-picking frenzy with family! Enjoy the fruits of your labor. After a long day of picking apples and making memories, you need a place to put them. Sure, if you want to dig into your apples right away, a bowl on the counter is fine. But if you want to store these apples for safekeeping (or making pie, apple crisp, apple sauce, or myriad other things), keep them somewhere nice and cool, like a refrigerator. If you keep your apples cool, they’ll stay good for weeks, ensuring you can enjoy the fruits of your labor all month!
