to become leaders in AI is to develop strong academic programs that offer comprehensive education in AI and related fields. Creating undergraduate and graduate degree programs in AI, machine learning, and data science can provide students with the skills to excel in these areas. HBCUs can benefit from collaborations with leading tech companies to create curricula that are rigorous and relevant. For instance, partnerships with companies like Google, Apple, and IBM can lead to the development of specialized courses, certification programs, and digital badges that give HBCU students a competitive edge.

H istorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have long boasted academic excellence, preserved Black culture, produced the nation’s Black leaders and professionals, and advocated for social justice. The quickly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI) presents an opportunity for HBCUs to become centers of excellence on AI, playing a crucial role in promoting equity. By being leaders in AI education, research, and innovation, HBCUs can ensure that the benefits of this technology are accessible to marginalized communities, addressing historical inequities in access and representation.
