FROM THE HILLTOP TO THE MOUNTAIN TOP: HOWARD ALUM SILAS WOODS REFLECTS ON LEGACY OF SERVICE

I n the fall of 2013, freshman student Silas Woods found himself tracing the steps of giants on the campus of Howard University. Woods, a determined political science major, was studying hard with hopes of making a mark in the nation’s capital. Little did he know that in three short years after graduating, he’d be walking the halls of the White House and flying on Air Force 1 as a staffer in the Biden administration.

“I think the first thing that I always tell anyone who will listen is that Howard was the first very big life decision I made for myself. It was the first decision I was ever wholeheartedly 100% invested in and ultimately it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made,” Woods said of his time at the Mecca. “So many doors were opened so many opportunities were presented to me by way of Howard.”

While in the College of Arts and Sciences, Woods says his foundation for a career of service was affirmed by students, staff and professors alike. Teachers like Keneshia Grant saw early promise in Woods who beamed with excitement for the future. “I could not be more proud of Silas. I have known him since his freshman year in college, when he was struggling to find his

way,” Grant shared. “By the time he graduated he was among the leaders of Howard University. I have taken great joy in watching him extend his leadership through roles in government and politics.” Woods was heavily involved in university culture as a member of the Freshman Leadership Academy, Drew Hall Step Team, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and many other
