administration promised to the American people so it means a lot to not only serve in this administration but also support Howard alum and fellow bison,” Woods expressed. “It’s incredible to watch her take on this historic role. Howard alum are not new to being the first in many spaces but this is an elevated position and the highest we have gotten.” He says seeing the Vice President breaking down barriers and trailblazing a pathway for others is the epitome of the university’s motto, “Veritas et Utilitas,” meaning in truth and service. “It’s incredible to see a Howard alum who is proud of her connection. From her you can see a throughline with Howard students on campus and their commitment to excellence,” said Woods. After spending a few years with her as a staffer, Woods was designated to guide journalists on the press team as a wrangler

spending time working under the first Black and openly LGBTQ+ White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre. “Silas Woods has the biggest heart of everyone that I know. And sometimes I worry about him because he has such a big heart. And every single day, I see him go above and beyond to coordinate movements, get you [reporters] all what you need and make accommodations for everyone as he can,” Jean- Pierre said on his last day in her department. “There isn’t a single person here who doesn’t have a kind word to say about Silas, and there’s no better teammate, which is why the Second Gentleman is stealing him from us.” Currently, Woods is a personal aide to the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff while also balancing events as deputy special projects director. Fellow alumnus and peer, Marquis Taylor called Woods a “pivotal mentor and rother throughout my entire matriculation.” “His commitment to excellence was evident in his work as a HUSA senator, where he spearheaded policy initiatives to improve the overall student experience,” said Taylor, who served as undergraduate trustee during his time at Howard. “Silas’ ability to connect with diverse groups of people, including classmates and even the Vice President of the United States, reflects his profound impact. Silas’s journey is a testament to his ability to inspire and lead those around him.” Upon graduation, Woods worked for the largest policy tracking organization for Democrats, American 21st Century Bridge before joining Vice President Kamala Harris’ office as a vetting researcher.
