8.7 Dealing with theft
Purpose: To protect our business and Bateel customers, it is important that all staff members are aware of the procedure to follow when dealing with shoplifting, suspected shoplifting, and other security related incidents.
Standard procedure:
If you suspect someone of stealing, please contact your Boutique Manager and Operations Manager immediately. Staff members should never try to deal with these situations on their own and must always prioritize their personal safety. Always send an incident report, escalating it according to the instructions on the incident report form.
Customer theft:
Bateel staff must never stop and accuse a customer of theft without first seeking advice from the Manager on Duty.
You must have evidence or have witnessed the theft first-hand.
Alert mall security and your manager immediately if you have seen theft in your store.

Staff theft:
Staff must never stop and accuse a team member of theft without first seeking advice from the Manager on Duty.
You must have evidence or have witnessed the theft first-hand.
Alert the area manager / operation manager / LP for further investigation.

Consequences: Bateel has the right to recover the cost of goods or cash stolen from the employee, either by deducting this from their settlement amount or by pursuing legal proceedings against the individual concerned. In all cases of theft, the company may also file a criminal case with the local police department against the staff member. If found guilty, the former employee will not be permitted to return to their home country until the criminal case has been dismissed or prison time has been served.
Staff search:
The company reserves the right to search any employee, their personal belongings, their locker, or their vehicle while they are on or leaving company premises.
Staff are requested to declare their belongings, cash value upon entering the Boutique.
The search processes:
Every employee member has the right to be accompanied by a willing colleague during any search and this should be clearly stated before the search commences.
Refusal to be searched may lead to disciplinary action.
The person conducting the search must refrain from touching either the staff member or their property.
A staff member must be asked to empty all their pockets and display the contents of their bag.
Searches will normally be carried out on company premises in an area away from customers.
A staff member can ask for the search to be conducted by a person of the same gender, if available
If a person of the same gender is not available, the search will still go ahead.
Important Note: Staff search process will be randomly conducted. At least one person from the team must be searched a minimum of once a month by Loss Prevention / Boutique Manager/Operations Manager.
